Student answer (Band 5.5)

The picture greatly illustrates the difference between beechwood Farm in 1950 and now.

In 1950, The farm had fruits and vegetables on one side and the sheep on the other side of the track. The Farmhouse, chickens and the Barn were after the vegetables in the corner. The road had'nt been built properly yet so it was a normal track passing through the Beechwood Farm.

But now, The Beechhood Farm has been greatly reorganised. There is a parking in the start right next to the road passing by. There is Farm shop so people can buy fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the farm. The road has been properly constructed. Infront of the fruit and vegetable trees, People can now set up camps in the Camping field. The Barn, Farmhouse and chickens are slightly reorganised with the road leading directly to the Barn. While now The Beechwood farm has holiday cottages next to the Farmhouse as well where people can stay.

Another great enhancement is that now the Beechword farm now runs on Solar panels and is now an enviroment friendly farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and comparing them with today's layout. You successfully identified key transformations, such as the replacement of sheep with a camping field and solar panels, and the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages. However, some areas are under-developed or lack precision. For instance, the sheep area from 1950 is not explicitly contrasted with what replaced it in the exact same location, and certain details like the precise positioning of the new buildings could be integrated into a clearer overview. To reach a higher band, ensure all major visual changes are fully extended and linked with a cohesive summary of the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division between past and present descriptions, utilising paragraphs to separate the time periods. There is an attempt to sequence information logically, starting with the 1950 layout and moving chronologically to current modifications. However, the progression between sentences can feel slightly disjointed due to repetitive referencing and mechanical cohesive devices, such as starting multiple sentences with 'There is' or 'The road'. Pronoun referencing and substitution need to be handled more flexibly to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative details. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires more varied linking expressions to enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe basic features like the 'Farmhouse', 'Barn', and 'vegetables'. You attempt some less common vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'reorganised', 'enhancement', and 'environment friendly'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'Infront of the fruit and vegetable trees' (vegetables do not grow on trees) and spelling issues like 'Beechhood' and 'enviroment'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, but they restrict your score. To improve, focus on precise terminology for geographical changes and ensure correct spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as descriptive clauses and passive voice ('has been greatly reorganised'). There are, however, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that become apparent throughout the text, including capitalization mistakes like 'The farm', missing articles ('There is a parking'), and contraction errors like 'road had'nt been built'. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they occur regularly alongside limited structural variety in your complex sentences. Improving your control over articles, punctuation, and verb tense consistency will help elevate your grammatical accuracy.
