Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview of the main changes and making relevant comparisons between Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today. The key transformations—such as the conversion of the sheep field into a camping field, the addition of holiday cottages, a farm shop, parking areas, and solar panels—are all accurately reported. The overview highlights the primary shift from traditional farming to modern facilities and tourism, while also noting elements that remained unchanged, such as the farmhouse and certain crops. However, some details are slightly under-developed or generalized, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. For instance, the exact positioning of newer features relative to older structures could be described with greater precision, and a few minor layout details from the prompt maps are omitted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement and logical progression, successfully bridging the gap between a standard Band 6 and the requirements of the next level. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, moving into specific details of the 1950 layout, outlining current modifications, and concluding with retained features. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the comparisons, using transition markers such as "Firstly", "Meanwhile", "Today", and "In addition". However, referencing and paragraphing occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and sentence-to-sentence transitions could be smoother and more sophisticated to fully secure a higher band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer displays an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, attempting less common lexical items such as "transformed considerably", "facilities", and "untouched". While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main changes, there are several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as spelling "beachwood" instead of "Beechwood", writing "sheeps" instead of "sheep", and misspelling "pannels" instead of "panels". Furthermore, phrases like "natural feature reamin unchanged" contain spelling slips and minor collocation inaccuracies. These errors do not impede communication, placing the lexical range firmly at this level, but greater precision and flawless spelling are needed for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as subordinate clauses ("While it was used for mainly traditional farming...") and passive constructions ("a camping field has built", "solar pannels have been installed"). However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent errors that detract from precision. There are notable punctuation and capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase letters at the start of sentences after periods or commas, stray commas), missing auxiliary verbs in passive structures ("has built" instead of "has been built"), and awkward prepositional phrases ("on northeast side"). These grammatical slips occur regularly throughout the text, reflecting the characteristics of this level.
