Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 117 words. Furthermore, it only describes the 1950 map of Beechwood Farm and completely omits any description or comparison of the second map showing the site 'today'. Because it addresses only a part of the prompt and is severely under-length, the response receives a low score for this criterion. To improve, you must write at least 150 words and ensure that all visual information presented in the task—including changes over time and comparisons between the two time periods—is thoroughly covered.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organization, separating the description into an introductory sentence followed by a brief overview, but there is no overall progression since the second half of the task is entirely missing. Basic cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Overall' and 'Above all', but referencing is sometimes unclear, for example when jumping between features like the farmhouse, barn, and chickens without a smooth spatial flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the text is far too brief to demonstrate skilful or sufficient logical sequencing across a full report. To reach a higher level, you need to structure your writing into clear paragraphs that logically guide the reader through all parts of the visual data using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description, featuring terms such as 'allocations', 'fruits', 'vegetables', 'livestock', and 'walking track'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and unnatural phrasing, such as 'along side of the river', 'a farm house', and 'a vast portions is available for sheep' (where 'portions' should be singular and 'vast' is somewhat imprecise). Spelling and word formation are generally acceptable, but the range of vocabulary remains limited and relies heavily on repeating words directly from the prompt. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of less common vocabulary and precise descriptive verbs and nouns to summarise spatial data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'a vast portions is available' and 'a farm house is located... in between the Barn and chickens'. Prepositional phrases also contain errors, such as 'along side of the river' instead of 'alongside the river'. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning of the limited text provided, they are frequent enough to restrict the grammar score. To improve, you must incorporate a wider mix of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy in articles, prepositions, and singular/plural agreements.
