Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to present an overview of the changes to Beechwood Farm between 1950 and today, noting major alterations such as the addition of solar panels, holiday cottages, and a farm shop. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the 150-word minimum. Furthermore, the selection of features is somewhat incomplete and lacks precision, with descriptions that remain underdeveloped or overly brief. For instance, the mention of how the barn and surrounding roads changed lacks clarity. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to provide a fully developed comparison that covers all significant visual elements without falling short of the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text attempts a logical structure by dividing the response into an introduction, body paragraphs contrasting the past and present layouts, and an overall summary. However, the organisation lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' which do not always logically fit the spatial comparisons being made. Additionally, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with the concluding remarks split into short, disjointed sentences. Improving the flow and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would significantly enhance the overall coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable limitations and inaccuracies. The student relies heavily on simple terms and direct lifting from the prompt. There are several vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'illustratrs' and 'compre', along with awkward phrasing like 'looked liked a simple planned'. Less common lexical items are rarely attempted, and when they are, word choice and word formation errors occasionally impede smooth comprehension. To improve in this criterion, the writer should expand their range of functional vocabulary for describing maps and trends, ensuring correct word forms and precise collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently contain errors. There are frequent issues with verb forms, tense consistency, and missing prepositions or articles, such as 'in 1950 beechwood farm is looked liked' and 'today's plan is additional things solar panels are inserted'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also show instability, leading to run-on structures or fragments. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and restrict the score. To achieve higher bands, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, improve subject-verb agreement, and correctly form passive and active clauses.
