Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The map shows the layout of a farm site in 1950, and the developments that have been made in it till date.

Overall, a major change has been made in the sheep area, where parking areas, camping field, and solar energy panels are being introduced. The track is transformed into a road which leads to a barn in the South. Moreover, a farm shop is added near the fruit trees.

To commence with, the sheep area in the top-right section has been transformed significantly with the addition of two parking areas out of which one is facing the west and other is towards the north. In addition, tents have been installed for camping accompanying solar panels and a tree near the camps. Another major change is the formation of proper road in place of a track, while a barn is relocated to the south linked with the road.

On the other hand, the barn on the lower side of the track is replaced with holday cottages. Moreover, a farm shop near the fruit trees is also constructed. Conversely, farmhouse, and the sections of chicken, vegetables and, soft fruits remain unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the farm in 1950 and comparing them with the layout today. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the transformation of the sheep area, the introduction of roads, a farm shop, and holiday cottages. Key comparisons are made throughout the text, such as noting that the farmhouse, chicken section, and vegetable plots remain unchanged. However, some details are slightly inaccurate according to the map, such as the statement that the barn is relocated to the south when the original barn was further north and a new barn or structure appears at the southern end, showing a slight tendency to overgeneralize or misinterpret map features in places. Nevertheless, all prompt requirements are addressed adequately with clear reporting of visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the northern developments from the southern and western features. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To commence with', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand' are employed to guide the reader through the comparisons. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical, and referencing between paragraphs can be a bit rigid. To reach higher bands, the integration of cohesive devices could be smoother and more subtle, avoiding formulaic transition phrases while maintaining a clear and seamless flow of information between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms relevant to map descriptions such as 'layout', 'developments', 'transformed significantly', and 'relocated'. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'accompanying' and 'construction'. However, there are some minor word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'holday' instead of 'holiday' and slightly unnatural phrasing like 'tents have been installed for camping accompanying solar panels'. These lexical slips and occasional awkward collocations prevent the vocabulary score from rising higher, though communication remains clear and the range is sufficient to discuss spatial changes and features effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures and relative clauses such as 'where parking areas, camping field, and solar energy panels are being introduced' and 'out of which one is facing the west'. There is good control over punctuation and basic sentence construction. However, some grammatical errors and awkward prepositional choices persist, such as 'till date' instead of 'to date', 'out of which one is facing the west and other' lacking an article, and tense inconsistencies. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid foundation with control over standard structures while highlighting areas where grammatical accuracy needs tightening to achieve a higher level of control.
