Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main changes between 1950 and the present day at Beechwood Farm. An overview is attempted, noting the shift from agricultural use to recreational and commercial facilities. However, some key features are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the student mentions that the sheep area is replaced with two parking facilities and camping fields, but overlooks other significant alterations such as the addition of solar panels and holiday cottages in a cohesive manner. Certain details lack precision, but overall, the selection of information is generally relevant and covers the scope of both maps adequately for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise information chronologically and topically. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, body details, and concluding observations, giving the text a structured appearance. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, with awkward transitions like 'Though, main road & river remains as it is'. Referencing and logical progression between sentences occasionally falter, making the flow somewhat disjointed. While cohesive devices are present, they are not always managed with sufficient flexibility to ensure a completely smooth progression of ideas throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully incorporating terms relevant to map descriptions such as 'construction', 'facility', and 'reconstructed'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing occur, such as 'farm shop is inbuild with fruit tress area' and 'holiday cottage is built in the place of Barn'. Spelling and word-form errors, including 'tants' instead of tents and 'tress' instead of trees, are noticeable but do not severely impede communication. The lexical range remains minimally sufficient to convey the main transformations on the farm site.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in article usage, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The two maps illustrates' and 'shifted towards south side of the road'. Attempts at complex structures often result in grammatical slips, for example, 'In 1950 a small track was connected with main road and Barn on the east side.' Punctuation and phrasing issues recur throughout the response. These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret correctly, placing the grammatical performance firmly within this band.
