Student answer (Band 6.5)
The changes that have taken place in Beechwood Farm, meanwhile 1950 and now are illustrated by the provided maps.
Overall, the Beechwood Farm understands intensive modernisation, with new of facilities such as solar panels, camping field and car park being added, while some original featues were either retained or removed.
Firstly, a road has been constructed in place of the track. The barn which was adjascent to the track has now been reduced in size and relocated to the point of intersection of the roads. In place of the barn, new holiday cottages have been built and a small farm shop has been added in the north-east corner of the region bearing fruit trees. The farmhouse and area for chickens, vegetables and soft fruits have been kept the same.
In the northern part of the farm, the area that was for sheep has been redeveloped into a camping field, parking and for solar panels. The solar panels have been installed in the eastern part of the region and a small parking area has been constructed to the south of it. The camping field takes up the majority of the space, which includes some tents and some trees, with another car park constructed adjascent to the field in the west.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by successfully summarizing the main features of Beechwood Farm between 1950 and the present day. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph mentioning key changes such as the addition of modernization facilities alongside retained and removed features. Key data points and transformations are reported adequately, such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field, parking, and solar panels, and the construction of holiday cottages and a farm shop. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or over-generalized, such as the relocation of the barn and the positioning of the farm shop, which sits between the fruit trees and the internal road rather than strictly in the north-east corner. To reach a higher band, greater precision in reporting specific spatial relationships and supporting details would be required.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organization and progression throughout the response. The introduction successfully frames the maps, followed by an overarching summary. The body paragraphs are logically structured, grouping the central developments and the northern transformations effectively. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as 'Firstly', 'In place of the barn', and 'In the northern part of the farm'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the map. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical, and referencing between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more seamless flow typical of higher bands. Overall, the text is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'intensive modernisation', 'redeveloped', and 'intersection'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices that detract from precision. For example, using 'meanwhile 1950 and now' is an unnatural temporal collocation, and 'featues' contains a spelling error. Furthermore, phrasing like 'new of facilities' and 'adjascent' (misspelling of adjacent) indicates issues with word form, spelling, and prepositional collocations. To reach the next level, you need to use a wider range of precise vocabulary consistently and eliminate spelling slips and unnatural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt to vary sentence structures with clauses such as 'The barn which was adjascent to the track...' and 'the area that was for sheep has been redeveloped...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as 'the Beechwood Farm understands intensive modernisation' (incorrect verb choice and article use) and missing commas or incorrect preposition usage. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the mid-range. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences while maintaining complex structures with precise verb tenses and article control.
