Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the task, noting key transformations such as the replacement of the sheep area with a camping field, parking, and solar panels, as well as the addition of holiday cottages and a farm shop. However, the coverage remains somewhat limited and partial. Certain features are under-developed or described with sweeping generalisations, such as stating that other things are the same without detailing how the layout has evolved. The overview is overly simplistic, stating only that many things have been changed without clearly highlighting the most significant overarching trends between 1950 and today. To move higher, the response needs to present a clearer and more fully developed overview of the main changes and select key features more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text exhibits some organisational structure with a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall summary attempt. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, and sometimes inaccurate, such as repetitive transitions like 'After the change, today'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the spatial relationships between the various farm features over time. To achieve a higher band, the writer must use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next with clear spatial and temporal referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the farm plans. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'solar panels' and 'holiday cottages', but overall lexical range is restricted. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'space fro sheep' and 'fruits trees' (plural noun modifier), along with capitalization issues. These errors reflect a restricted control of word forms and collocations, though they do not completely impede communication. To reach the next level, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of precise vocabulary and paraphrase visual data more naturally with correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing relies on a very limited range of sentence structures, mostly simple sentences and basic compound constructions with frequent coordination. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty or lack proper punctuation. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('the beechwood farm', 'near by chickens'), incorrect prepositions ('below the roads'), and punctuation errors like missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a lack of control over complex grammatical patterns. To improve, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms while improving basic grammatical accuracy and punctuation control.
