Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today. It provides a clear overview noting the general shift towards infrastructural modifications and the addition of tourist and commercial facilities. Key changes, such as the conversion of tracks to roads, the replacement of the sheep area with solar panels, and the addition of holiday cottages and a farm shop, are accurately reported. However, some areas feel slightly under-developed or lack precise spatial integration—for instance, the description of the barn and the old track system is somewhat tangled. To reach a higher band, the report would need more seamless integration of data comparison and a sharper focus on highlighting all major structural transformations without minor navigational confusions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, dividing the content into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing the past and present layouts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate timeframes. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, as seen in awkward transitions and referencing issues, such as 'which later converted was to holiday cottages' and abrupt shifts between sentences. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, transitional phrases could be varied more effectively to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial changes between the two maps.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a task describing maps, employing useful terms such as 'infrastructual modifications', 'temporary chicken area', and 'solar panels'. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-choice errors, including spelling slips like 'infrastructual' and 'currrent', alongside awkward phrasing such as 'the sheeps' (sheep is plural) and 'placed at the opposite the chickens area'. Attempts at less common vocabulary sometimes result in unnatural collocations or inaccurate forms, which keeps the lexical score constrained, though communication remains mostly clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at passive structures and relative clauses, such as 'a farm shop has been added with the fruit trees' and 'facilities like holiday cottages... has been added'. There are several grammatical errors present, including subject-verb agreement issues ('a camping field and a camping field... has been added' where plural subjects require plural verbs), incorrect prepositional patterns ('placed at the opposite the'), and awkward phrasing like 'which later converted was to holiday cottages'. These errors occasionally cause minor bumps for the reader, though they rarely impede overall communication.
