Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key information about the changes to Beechwood Farm between 1950 and today. While the candidate correctly identifies major alterations such as the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field and the addition of holiday cottages, the overview is rather vague and basic. Some details are inaccurate or inadequately developed, such as the claim that the barn was moved to where two roads join when the plans show different structural layouts and a new farm shop. To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a clearer, more fully developed summary of the overall trends and ensure that all key features are reported accurately without confusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The information is grouped into paragraphs comparing the past and present layouts, but the transitions between ideas are mechanical and occasionally confusing. Cohesive devices are used very sparingly and sometimes inaccurately, such as the abrupt shift using 'while fruit tress' and 'In new design'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs needs tightening. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties more naturally and ensure each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with frequent lexical errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items related to the map features, such as 'camping field', 'solar panels', and 'holiday cottages', but struggles with basic word forms, spelling, and collocations. Examples of errors include 'tress' instead of trees, 'vechiles' instead of vehicles, and 'joinig' instead of joining. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range and pay closer attention to accurate spelling, word formation, and precise terminology suitable for describing map changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses with frequent faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the response, including missing articles ('how site of farm look', 'addition of the camping field'), incorrect verb tenses and forms ('how it look now', 'where two road joining'), and punctuation omissions. These frequent errors disrupt the reading flow and demonstrate poor control over basic grammatical patterns. To improve, the writer needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and accurate tense consistency when describing visual data.
