Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrate the changes made in Beechwood farm between1950 and the present date.

Overall, the place is now became more leisure type than earlier, and due to the addition of the solar panals the place has became budget friendly for the owners.

In 1950 when we entered in the farm after crossing the road from north side we had an access immediately to the Fruit trees where the Farm shop is now added. Beside them the soft fruits and vegetable field is reamined as it is without any changes. The track from 1950 is now changes to roads for easy access. Immediately next to the vegetable field the Barn is now moved which was previously on the farmhouse side. On the right side of the Barn the chikens and Farmhouse are also kept as it is withou doing any changes in them. And the new Holiday cottages are now added in the place of barn. After crossing the road earlier the big space was allocated to sheep but that is now converted into camping area, two parking spaces and new solar panels are also added.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by identifying the main features and making comparisons between 1950 and the present day at Beechwood Farm. However, some aspects of the task are handled unevenly. While the transformation of the sheep area into a camping field, parking, and solar panels is noted, other features are described with a mix of inaccuracies and colloquial phrasing, such as claiming the barn 'moved which was previously on the farmhouse side.' The overview provided in the second sentence attempts to capture the general trend of leisure development and modernization, but overall development of key features remains somewhat limited and occasionally unclear, keeping the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to guide the reader through the changes from north to south and past to present. However, the logical progression is hindered by dense, poorly grouped text and repetitive cohesive patterns, such as the frequent use of 'now' and 'nowadays'-style temporal shifts. Paragraphing is weak, as the entire body of the response is crammed into a single block instead of being logically divided into an introduction, an overview, and distinct descriptive paragraphs. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it sometimes difficult to follow exactly which structures correspond to the original map.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic descriptions of the farm buildings and land uses, such as 'fruit trees', 'vegetable field', and 'holiday cottages'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'more leisure type', 'budget friendly', 'solar panals' (spelling), and 'chikens'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but issues with collocation and word formation prevent a higher score, though communication is generally not impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses ('When we entered in the farm...', 'where the Farm shop is now added'). However, control over grammatical structures and mechanics is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in prepositions and phrasing ('entered in the farm', 'on the farmhouse side', 'without doing any changes'), incorrect tense shifts, missing articles, and punctuation flaws, including a missing space after 'between1950'. These errors reflect a limited range of error-free complex structures, though meaning remains mostly decipherable.
