IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given diagrams show the site of Beechwood Farm. The upper diagram shows the site of farm in 1950 and the lower diagram shows the same site today.
Looking back in 1950, the farm had a large area called sheep but today that area is mostly crowed. The route of river today is still the same as 1950. The tracks in 1950 have been canverted to road for more convinience.
The fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetable, chickens and farmhouse are the same as they were in 1950 to today. However, the barn near farmhouse has been converted into a holiday cottage. A new barn in made in the corner of road.
The sheep area is now covered with solar panels and camping field. Comparing to 1950, today in the Beechwood Farm has a lot of parking facilities. A farm sop is also made in the side of road near fruit trees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main task by outlining some general changes between 1950 and today, such as noting that the sheep area is now covered with solar panels and a camping field. However, the information is presented with notable inaccuracies and omissions. For example, the student claims that 'the fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetable, chickens and farmhouse are the same as they were', missing several significant developments like the new farm shop and holiday cottages. Furthermore, the selection of features lacks sufficient detail and a clear overview, causing the response to remain limited and under-developed overall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organization with a basic introductory sentence and a separation of body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. The relationship between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and referencing is unclear in places, such as the abrupt transition in 'Looking back in 1950, the farm had a large area called sheep but today that area is mostly crowed.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow requires better cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial and chronological comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are several noticeable word choice and spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'crowed' instead of crowded, 'canverted' instead of converted, 'convinience' instead of convenience, and 'sop' instead of shop. The range is restricted primarily to basic terms, and attempts at less common vocabulary either result in awkward phrasing or spelling mistakes that hinder precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at complex or modified sentences often become faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions and articles, such as 'Looking back in 1950' (instead of Looking back to 1950), 'site of farm' (missing an article), 'today that area' (missing a preposition), and 'A new barn in made' (incorrect preposition). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and distraction for the reader.
