IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The plans provide information about all the development that is carried out at Beechwood Farm since the year 1950.
Overall, the major development was carried out in the sheep area, while other areas undergone minor improvements. Also, the track is replaced by a newly paved road.
In 1950, a track was built to access various facilities of the farm, which is replaced by the newly paved road. Moreover, the area that is designated for sheep is replaced by various facilities, including a camping field, solar panels, and a parking area adjacent to the road.
New parking and a farm shop are built at the entrance to the main road. Farm lands that were designated for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetable farms remained unchanged. A barn is constructed at the joining point of two minor roads, forming a triangle. The barn that is situated at the end of the minor road is replaced by holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features and changes shown in the two maps of Beechwood Farm. A clear overall trend is presented in the second paragraph, noting the major transformation of the sheep area and the general retention of the farming plots. Key details are highlighted, such as the replacement of the track with a paved road, the addition of the camping field, solar panels, and holiday cottages. However, some aspects of the comparison are slightly underdeveloped or lack finer spatial detail, sitting comfortably at the given level by meeting the core requirements of overview and feature selection without fully exploring every single minor structural adjustment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The report displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is suitably broken down into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and a broad overview, followed by supporting body paragraphs that describe specific spatial transformations. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 1950', and 'Moreover' are used to connect ideas, though cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic. Paragraphing is handled reasonably well to group related features of the farm, but smoother transitions between the historical layout and current modifications would elevate the text to a higher standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying specific geographical and structural changes with terms such as 'designated', 'adjacent', 'constructed', and 'remained unchanged'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items and accurate descriptions of farm features like 'soft fruits', 'solar panels', and 'holiday cottages'. However, there are occasional awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'development that is carried out' rather than 'changes that have taken place', which prevent the lexical range from reaching higher bands. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating passive structures such as 'is replaced' and 'are built' to describe the map changes. There is a good attempt at controlling grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences present throughout the text. Nevertheless, some tense inconsistencies and minor awkwardness in clause integration persist, such as 'all the development that is carried out' instead of past tense referencing. Punctuation is generally sound, and the grammatical control is sufficient to ensure meaning is clear, representing solid performance at this level.
