IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are two plans that compares todays condition of the Beechwood farm with its condition during 1950.
Overall, the tourist facilities have been constructed in the farm to facilitate people, adding more value to the unchanged main features of the farm that includes three types of crops, the farm house, chickens, barn and the transportation route.
The main development took place in the sheeps area since it was a huge land used for just one purpose. Now, two parking lots are made in both corners with a camping field in the middle to attract more visitors. Not only this, solar panels are also set up in the north eastern part to improve the power supply conditions of the farm. However, slight changes have are made in the southern area of the farm as road replaces the track and holiday cottages take space of the barn. In addition, a farm shop is constructed on a portion of fruit trees land to encourage trade and a new barn is developed in the southern area connecting with two sides of the road while the rest of the area remains the same as it was in 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of Beechwood Farm in both 1950 and the present day, while also making relevant comparisons. An overview is provided, highlighting the introduction of tourist facilities alongside unchanged features. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies compared to the visual data. For instance, the original sheep area was replaced by a camping field and parking, but the text states that 'two parking lots are made in both corners' when parking is actually located near the entrance and along the northern edge of the eastbound road. Additionally, the original barn was not entirely replaced by holiday cottages, as a new barn was developed in the southern area. These minor lapses in precise spatial reporting prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph detailing the specific changes. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence, moving from general observations to specific modifications. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or faulty. For example, transitions like 'Not only this,' are somewhat informal for an Academic task, and referencing can occasionally be slightly unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'changes have are made'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points, but smoother logical connectors would elevate the flow of the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'tourist facilities', 'solar panels', 'camping field', and 'transportation route'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally accompanied by word choice or collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'todays condition' instead of 'today's condition' or 'sheeps area' instead of 'sheep area'. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, as the reader can easily follow the description of the map changes, but more precise lexical control is needed to reach the next band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and compound sentences effectively, such as in 'a camping field in the middle to attract more visitors' and 'a farm shop is constructed on a portion of fruit trees land to encourage trade'. There are some noticeable errors in grammar, most notably the tense error 'changes have are made' and the agreement slip 'compares todays condition'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors do occur, they rarely impede communication and do not obscure the intended meaning of the spatial descriptions.
