Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given maps illustrates the chages that have taken place at Beechwood Fram between 1950 and the present day.

Overall, the farm has undergone considerable development, particularly in terms of roads, buildings and recreational facilities. However, several agriculatural areas, as well as the farmhouse, barn and river, have remained largely unchanged.

In 1950, the northern and central parts of the farm were mainly used for agriculature. There areas for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, while the northern section was occupied by sheep. A network of tracks connected these area with the farmhouse and barn in the eastern part of the farm. The farmhouse, barn and chicken area were all located in roughly the same positions as they are today.

Today, the agricultural areas have remained relatively stable, with the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetabless still occupying thier original locations. However, the sheep area has been replaced by a camping field, which now contains several tents. In additions, a farm shop and a parking area have been constructed near the fruit trees, while the former tracks systems has been replaced with roads.

Furthermore, development can be seen in the eastern part of the farm. A second parkign area, holiday cottages and solar panels have been added, making the site more suitable for visitors and recreational activites. The farmhouse, barn and chicken area have been retained, while the river surrounding the sourthern and western sides of the farm has remained unchaged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response gives a clear overview of the main changes, identifying substantial development in roads, buildings and visitor facilities while noting that key agricultural areas and the river remain. It also makes relevant comparisons between the two plans, such as the sheep area becoming a camping field and tracks being replaced by roads. Most locations are reported consistently with the maps. To make the account more fully developed, be more precise about the eastern changes: the solar panels are in the north-east corner, while the holiday cottages are south of the eastbound road. The statement that the farmhouse, barn and chicken area remain in roughly the same positions is broadly accurate, but the barn’s position relative to the farmhouse changes. These details would reduce generalisation and sharpen the comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is organised clearly: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the earlier layout and then the present-day changes. This gives the reader a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “However,” “In addition” and “Furthermore” help signal contrasts and additions. The final paragraph also brings the account back to retained features. Some connections are slightly repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “However” and “while,” and the transition from the agricultural changes to the eastern developments could be more explicit. Grouping the changes by area or by what was retained versus added would make the progression even smoother. Overall, the paragraphing and cohesion are effective, though not consistently flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a changing site, including “undergone considerable development,” “replaced,” “constructed,” and “retained.” These choices communicate the main changes clearly, and terms such as “recreational facilities” suit the map. However, several spelling errors—“chages,” “agriculatural,” “vegetabless,” “parkign,” and “unchaged”—show inconsistent control and detract from an otherwise understandable account. Some wording is also imprecise: “agricultural areas have remained relatively stable” is less exact than saying that the named plots remain in their original locations. Aim for accurate spelling and more specific map vocabulary, especially when describing where new features are situated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “However, several agricultural areas … have remained largely unchanged” and the participial phrase “making the site more suitable for visitors.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the present perfect is generally used appropriately to describe changes over time. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The given maps illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “There areas” is missing the verb “are.” In “A network of tracks connected these area,” the plural noun form is needed. Check agreement, articles and plural forms during proofreading, and ensure each sentence has a complete grammatical structure.
