IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagrams illustrate the Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today after the changes that took place through development and expansion.

Overall, the farm has utilized its space conveniently by including more facilities such as shops, parkings, holiday cottages, camping etc. In addition, it has focused on renewable energy source, installing solar panels.

The Beechwood Farm had no facilities for visitors as there was no parkings or cottages in 1950. It only had a massive grazing field for sheeps, gardens for soft fruits and vegetables, a poultry farm, a large storage and a farm house. Additionally, it had a long unpaved track towards the barn and farmhouse, resulting in difficulties for people.

At present, however, the farm has featured modern facilities and allocated them efficiently. It has constructed two parking spots and holiday cottages for visitors to serve them more than before. The farm experienced a major shift as the grazing field has turned into an area for camping and solar panels. Moreover, the track has developed into a paved road, increasing mobility. In general, the farm has become more efficient and convenient today than it was in 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall change: the farm has gained visitor facilities and solar panels, while the former sheep-grazing area is now used for camping and energy generation. You also compare the track with the present road network and mention the continued agricultural areas. These are relevant features and give the report a clear focus. However, some details are imprecise or unsupported: the 1950 plan shows a sheep area, not necessarily a “massive” field, and the map does not establish that the track was unpaved or that it caused difficulties. The description also omits notable changes such as the farm shop and the relocation or retention of the barn and farmhouse. More precise coverage of these changes would make the summary more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview, description of the earlier layout and account of the present site. The contrastive progression from “In 1950” to “At present, however” makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “In general” help signal relationships between ideas. The overview also gives the reader a useful sense of the farm’s development. Some connections are less exact: “Additionally” introduces another 1950 feature without clarifying its relationship to the previous list, while the final sentence repeats the general claim of greater efficiency and convenience rather than adding a distinct comparison. Grouping the changes by location or by retained and newly added features would make the progression more precise and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “grazing field,” “renewable energy source,” “holiday cottages,” and “paved road,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “allocated them efficiently” and “major shift.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a plan: “parkings” is not the usual countable form, “gardens” does not precisely describe the labelled plots, and “poultry farm” overstates what the chicken enclosure shows. “Conveniently” and “efficiently” also make evaluative claims that the map itself cannot confirm. Aim for precise map vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “parking areas,” “plots,” and “the site was redeveloped.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening participial phrase “after the changes that took place through development and expansion” and the contrastive clause beginning “At present, however.” Most sentences communicate their main point clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement and number: “the Beechwood Farm” would normally be “Beechwood Farm,” “a large storage” needs a suitable count noun, and “the grazing field has turned” does not agree naturally with the plural subject implied by the earlier description. The sentence beginning “It only had…” also contains a long list whose grammatical forms are not consistently parallel. Check article use, singular/plural agreement and list structure; greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the response.
