Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan illustrates the site of a Beechwood farm from 1950 and at a present day.

Overall, it is evident from the image that beechwood farm has changed and got renovated into commercial farm. Track is converted into road and camping field is introduced in the park.

In 1950, there was area for sheep at the north-east corner which is converted into camping field and along with that solar panels are installed. Track is renovated into road and barn is relocated at the south corner of the park. There are three zones such as fruit tree, soft fruits and vegetables next to the river which remained at the same location.

Farm shop is constructed on the fruit trees site.Separate area is allocated for the the parking. Barn is demolished and converted into holiday cottages which is situated at the south-east side. Farmhouse and chicken farm remained at same location which is at south-east corner of the farm next to the river.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad change from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, and you report several relevant features, including the new camping field, solar panels, farm shop and holiday cottages. You also note that the river and the three crop areas remain. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep area is in the north of the site, not specifically the north-east corner, and the barn was not relocated to the south corner; the present-day plan shows it near the southern road junction. The claim that the barn was converted into cottages is also incorrect: the barn remains, while cottages are added near the farmhouse. The overview mentions a camping field as being “in the park,” which is not a clear summary of the main transformation. Develop the overview and check each location and change against both plans.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. This gives the reader a basic route through the comparison, and phrases such as “In 1950” help establish the time frame. However, the progression between features is not always clear. The final paragraph moves from the farm shop and parking to cottages, then back to the farmhouse and chickens without a consistent spatial or chronological order. Some links are also awkward or repetitive, such as “along with that” and “which is situated.” Grouping the western crop and shop changes separately from the eastern visitor and building changes would make the organisation easier to follow. Use clearer references to locations and avoid joining unrelated details in the same sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “converted,” “installed,” “allocated,” “demolished” and “remained,” so the main changes are generally understandable. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices that limit precision: “got renovated into commercial farm” is not a natural description of the overall change, and “in the park” does not accurately identify the camping field’s location. “Fruit tree” should be plural when referring to the area, and “chicken farm” is less precise than the map label “chickens.” Repeated use of “site,” “area” and “location” also makes the description less varied. Aim for accurate map vocabulary such as “field,” “plot,” “facility” and “road,” and choose verbs that distinguish removal, retention and addition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview clause “it is evident … that” and relative clauses such as “which remained at the same location.” The meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in sentence structure, articles and agreement remain. For example, “from 1950 and at a present day” has an incorrect time expression, while “Track is converted into road” needs articles and a consistent tense. The sentence beginning “Farm shop is constructed…” runs directly into the next sentence without a space after the full stop, and “the the parking” contains a repeated article. There is also an awkwardly joined sentence in “which is converted into camping field and along with that solar panels are installed.” Use past and present forms consistently and check articles, sentence boundaries and clause connections.
