Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map below illustrates a farm current condition and how it was before in 1950.

Overall, the major changes include hte transformation of sheep area, a new bam at the end of the road, development of roads, new parking area and a holiday cortage on the eastern side of the farm.

As we can see, in 1950 there was a huge sheep cattle area on the corner of the farm. There was a big bam area along the track on eastern side of farm and opposite to the sheep area, there was a farmhouse behind the bam and a chicken house also located there. There was a fruit trees area, soft fruit area and vegetable area all od which were positioned adjacent to each other, with a road running to the left-hand side of the farm. While a river flowed behind these areas.

Compared with the past, the farm had undergone various changes. The sheep area had undergone a complete transformation, with the site now become a camping area. Furthermore, additional parking areas has also added on both corner, along with a designated area for solar pannel. The development of roads can be seen. A new farm shop is also erected along the road, opposite to the parking area. Bam is transfered to a new destination. A holiday cottages is replaced with bam area. However, the chicken area is remained unchanged and is till located in its previous position.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important changes, including the loss of the sheep area, the addition of camping, parking, solar panels and a farm shop, and the development of roads. The overview also recognises that the eastern side has been redeveloped. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: the barn was not simply moved to a new destination; the original barn remains, while a new barn is shown farther south-west. The statement that holiday cottages replaced the barn reverses their positions, and the farmhouse and chickens are described as unchanged without noting the cottages built nearby. Develop the overview around the main contrast between retained agricultural areas and new visitor facilities, then describe the locations more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the 1950 plan, and a comparison with today. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Compared with the past” help signal the stages of the account. The progression is not fully smooth, however. Several short statements in the final paragraph—“The development of roads can be seen. A new farm shop is also erected…”—read like a list rather than a connected comparison. Some references are also unclear, particularly “there” and “both corner.” Group related changes by area and use clearer links to show how each feature relates to the others.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of map-related vocabulary, including “transformation,” “adjacent,” “designated area,” and “development of roads.” These choices help communicate the broad changes, but several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “bam” appears repeatedly for “barn,” “cortage” for “cottages,” and “solar pannel” for “solar panel.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “farm current condition,” “sheep cattle area,” and “a new farm shop is also erected.” Use standard map-description collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for location and change would help distinguish features that remain from those that have been added or relocated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast introduced by “Compared with the past” and the clause beginning “with the site now…”. The main information is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. Examples include “additional parking areas has also added” (agreement and passive form), “the site now become” (verb form), “A holiday cottages is” (number agreement), and “the chicken area is remained unchanged” (incorrect passive construction). Articles and prepositions are also sometimes missing, as in “on eastern side of farm.” Practise accurate past and present passive forms for describing changes, and check subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms when revising.
