IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans below illustrate the site of a farm in 1950 and how it looks today after its redevelopment.

Overall, the beechwood farm has undergone significant changes with many new facilities accessible today which lacked in 1950.

In 1950, the beechwood farm situated just beside the river had a spacious sheep area in the northeastern side of the farm. There was a barn, a farmhouse and chickens in southeastern part. A track in the centre separated the sheep area from rest of the sections of the farm. Vegetables, soft fruits and fruit trees were located in the southwestern part of the farm.

However, today the beechwood farm looks much different with more facilities added and some areas had been reconstructed. Solar panels have been installed in the northeastern part which has its own parking area and just beside there is a camping field with its own parking. The track has been converted into a road. To the east there are holiday cottages, a farmhouse, chickens and a barn which connects to the road. Fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are located in the western part of the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main contrast between the farm in 1950 and its present-day redevelopment, and your overview correctly notes that new facilities have been added. You also report several key features, including the sheep area, the three crop areas, the farmhouse and chickens, as well as the solar panels and holiday cottages today. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the 1950 sheep area is north of the track, not specifically in the north-eastern part, and today’s parking is not described as belonging to the camping field. The farm shop is also omitted, and the changes to the barn and the road layout are not clearly compared. More precise location descriptions and a fuller account of the most notable additions would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph about 1950 and one about today. This makes the chronological comparison easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “In 1950” and “However, today” help signal the stages. Some cohesion is less precise, however. The repeated phrase “the beechwood farm” and repeated use of “part” make the account feel somewhat mechanical, while “just beside there” has an unclear reference. The final paragraph lists several present-day features without grouping them by location or explaining their relationship. Use clearer referencing and organise details into meaningful spatial groups to make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a site plan, including “redevelopment,” “installed,” “converted” and “located.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the response remains understandable. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive: “many new facilities accessible today which lacked in 1950” is an awkward way to express that facilities were added, and “its own parking area” incorrectly suggests a direct association with the camping field. “Looks much different” is also less suitable for a formal report, and “part” is repeated several times. Aim for more precise map vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “introduced,” “situated,” and “in the north-eastern corner,” while avoiding unsupported relationships between features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening clause “how it looks today after its redevelopment” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences convey their meaning, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. For example, “the beechwood farm situated just beside the river had” needs a clearer relative clause or punctuation, and “in southeastern part” is missing an article. In “some areas had been reconstructed,” the past perfect does not fit the present-day comparison as naturally as a present perfect form. The long sentence beginning “Solar panels have been installed” also joins several locations without clear grammatical links. Practise accurate articles, tense choice and sentence boundaries while retaining varied structures.
