IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps provided illustrate the area of a farm in two different time: 1950 and at the moment.

From an overall perspective, it is obvious that there are several changes in some particular places.

According to the map in 1950, there was a road crossing the river on the top left-hand corner. At the middle of the map, some agriculture products were grown here, such as fruit trees, soft trees, and vegetables. Places for cattle, such as sheep and chickens, which seperated by a track. There were also a barn and farmhouse on the right of the map, between the track and the river.

The map now indicates that the road is remaining until now. There is a new farmshop in agriculture area. The place for sheep is now replaced with camping field and solar panels. There are also two new parking places. The tracks now are converted into the roads. The new barn moves to the corner of the roads, while the old barn is transferred into a building for holiday cottages. The agriculture products and the farmhouse are still unchanged up to now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the two dates and report several important changes, including the farm shop, camping field, solar panels, parking areas, and the conversion of the old barn into holiday cottages. You also note that the farmhouse and agricultural plots remain. However, the overview is vague (“several changes in some particular places”) rather than summarising the main pattern of development. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep area is replaced by both the camping field and solar panels, but these occupy distinct areas, and the new barn is not simply “moved to the corner of the roads”; it is positioned at the southern end of the road junction. The description of the original layout is also incomplete. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would make the key changes better developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a brief overview, and separate descriptions of the 1950 and present-day plans. This gives the reader a basic chronological progression, and phrases such as “According to the map in 1950” and “The map now indicates” help signal the time contrast. However, the overview does not guide the reader towards the main changes, and several details are presented as a list rather than grouped by location or type. The sentence “Places for cattle, such as sheep and chickens, which seperated by a track” is also difficult to follow, while “The agriculture products and the farmhouse are still unchanged” combines features that would be clearer in separate comparisons. Organising changes by area and using clearer references would improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “crossing the river,” “replaced,” “converted,” and “holiday cottages,” so the main information is generally understandable. There is also some attempt to vary wording when describing changes. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “different time” should refer to different years or periods, “soft trees” misnames the soft-fruit area, and “agriculture products” is not a natural description of the fields. “Places for cattle” is also inaccurate because sheep and chickens are livestock, not cattle. The spelling error “seperated” further affects accuracy. Aim for precise terms such as “agricultural plots,” “livestock,” and “soft-fruit field,” and use standard map-description collocations consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and some more developed structures, such as “The place for sheep is now replaced with camping field and solar panels.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparison, but some grammatical errors remain. In “two different time,” the noun needs a plural form, and “Places for cattle … which seperated by a track” is an incomplete clause; it needs a finite verb and a clearer sentence structure. Articles are also missing in “with camping field” and “There is a new farmshop.” Tense and aspect are awkward in “the road is remaining until now” and “the new barn moves,” where present perfect forms would better describe changes over time. More accurate clauses and consistent tense choices would strengthen control.
