Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrate the changes that took place on a farm's site over the period of 76 years.

Overall, it is clear that the site of a farmunderwent several significant changes, becoming more built up, making better use of the available space, while some facilities remaind unchanged, others were renovated and replaced, and several were new added.

In 1950, the site consists of three portions of fields including fruit tree, soft fruits and vegitables, with Barn, farmhouse and chickens across the track and river througout the farms. Moreover, sheep area was larger had found in opposite to the track.

In present, soft fruites and vegetables, farmhouse, chickens, and river are remained unchanged. Conversly, track on the upward of the fied has been transformed into road. Subsequently, Barn was situated near to the track, now has been attached with road triangle, and holidays cottages has been built at this place also.

Similarly, sheep area was removed and distributed into two parts. firstly, camping field along parking has been added on the left side, while sollar panels installed on the right of the farm's sheep area with seperate parking. Although both parking adjecent to the road's ending and starting points.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide an overview of the site becoming more developed and identify several important changes, including the addition of a camping field, solar panels, parking and holiday cottages. You also compare the earlier and current layouts. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barn was not attached to the road triangle, and the cottages are not described as replacing the barn; the barn remains, in a different position. The farm shop is omitted, and the claim that the sheep area was “distributed into two parts” does not clearly match the plan. Your account of what remained unchanged is useful, but the locations and changes need more precise reporting. Select the main transformations and describe them accurately to make the overview and comparisons more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two periods and their changes. This gives the reader a general route through the information. However, the progression is sometimes difficult to follow because several locations and comparisons are compressed into long or unclear sentences, such as “with Barn, farmhouse and chickens across the track and river throughout the farms.” The final sentence about the two parking areas is also incomplete in its relationship to the preceding point. Linking words such as “Moreover,” “Conversely,” and “Similarly” help signal connections, but some are used mechanically or do not express the relationship precisely. Group features by area or type of change, and use clearer references to the map locations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary relevant to describing maps, including “underwent,” “transformed,” “distributed,” and “adjacent,” and you use some appropriate terms such as “camping field” and “solar panels.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make details harder to understand: “vegitables,” “fruites,” “sollar,” and “seperate” are misspelled, while “distributed into two parts” is not a clear description of the sheep area’s change. Some collocations are also unnatural, including “on the upward of the field” and “at this place also.” Use accurate map vocabulary such as “north of,” “to the east of,” “replaced by,” and “converted into,” and check spelling carefully. This would make your descriptions more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause beginning “while some facilities…” and the contrast introduced by “Although.” However, some sentence structures are faulty, and several verb forms and agreement patterns are inaccurate. For example, “In 1950, the site consists” shifts incorrectly into the present tense, while “soft fruits and vegetables … are remained unchanged” uses an incorrect passive construction. In “sheep area was larger had found,” the relationship between the clauses is not grammatically clear. There are also problems with articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, including “holidays cottages has been built.” Practise consistent past-versus-present descriptions and build shorter, complete sentences before adding subordinate clauses.
