IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan represents the changes in the Beechwood farm in 1950 and how it looks today.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that sheep area is reserved now for parking, camping field and solar panels. The area become more developed over the years. Several new facilities added, while some existing features were remained same.
Turning to details, in 1950, there was sheep in the north-east corner of the map and there was a track which leads from the main road and a triangular road towards track. Whereas, besides that track there were an area for fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and chickens, barn, farmhouse along with river.
Now it is reconstructed, sheep area is transformed into several facilities: parking, camping filed and solar panels. Track is demlished into road. Meanwhile, barn is connected at the triagular path of the road. However, in th fruit trees area, there is a farm shop, and soft fruits, vegetables, chicken, farmhouse and river remained unchanged. While, barn is converted into holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall change: the farm became more developed, with new visitor-related facilities and solar panels. You also compare the former sheep area with its present use and mention several features that remain, which addresses the task’s central purpose. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep field was in the north of the site, not specifically the north-east corner, and the barn was not converted into holiday cottages; the cottages occupy a different area, while the barn remains. The claim that chickens and the river remained unchanged is broadly supported, but the locations and changes to the farmhouse and barn need clearer reporting. To strengthen the response, describe the main spatial changes accurately and distinguish retained features from relocated or newly added ones.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the earlier and present layouts. This gives the reader a basic progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Turning to details,” and “Meanwhile” help signal stages in the account. However, some connections are mechanical or confusing: “Whereas, besides that track” does not clearly relate the features, and the final sentence combines several changes with “However” and “While” without a clear logical relationship. References such as “that track” and “it” can also leave the reader unsure which feature is meant. Grouping the description by areas of the site, and using clearer contrasts between unchanged and changed features, would make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “transformed,” “facilities,” “triangular,” and “remained unchanged,” and these attempts help convey development over time. However, the range is not consistently precise, and several word-choice or spelling problems make parts of the description difficult to interpret. “Track is demlished into road” is an unsuitable expression for a route that was upgraded, while “camping filed” and “triagular” contain spelling errors. “Sheep area is reserved now for” also does not express the change naturally. Aim for accurate collocations and use the map’s labels directly where possible, such as “the track was replaced by an internal road” or “a camping field was added.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a passive construction in “sheep area is transformed.” However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer clauses. Examples include “The area become more developed,” “Several new facilities added,” and “there was sheep,” which need appropriate verb forms, articles, or passive structures. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is also incomplete as written, and “soft fruits, vegetables, chicken, farmhouse and river remained unchanged” lacks articles and clear parallel phrasing. Practise forming complete clauses and maintaining past-versus-present tense consistently; this will make your comparisons easier to follow.
