IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The Beechwood Farm, established in 1950, was somehow underpriviliged due to lack of some necessities. It was occupied by a patches of fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and sheep. A river is also flow through by its two sides. But as the time passed the farm became modern. It now hosts visiting camps, cottages to spend holidays in, a parking site, a farmhouse and a far shop to buy fresh fruits and vegetables cheaply. There is now solar panels installed which is cost effective and environmentally sustainable and also provide break free electrcity to run the farm and its operations. As the farm is situated near the main road, it is easily accessible and easy to go where a good time in nature could be spend. The tracks are now converted into roads and a barn is also constructed. In fact, the farm has changed and advanced much better than previously.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad change from a mainly agricultural farm in 1950 to a more developed site today, and mention several relevant features, including the fruit plots, sheep, camping, cottages, parking and solar panels. However, the comparison is only partly developed: the response does not clearly explain which features remained, such as the farmhouse, barn, chickens and fruit-growing areas, or describe the new road layout and the locations of the facilities. Some claims are not supported by the plans, including that the farm was “underpriviliged,” that the shop sells produce cheaply, and that the panels provide electricity for farm operations. A more objective overview and accurate, location-based comparisons would make the main changes clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a general chronological direction, moving from the farm in 1950 to its present-day use, and linking phrases such as “But as the time passed” and “In fact” help signal that movement. However, the information is presented as one continuous paragraph, with no clear separation between the overview and the details. Several ideas are also joined in a way that makes the progression difficult to follow: the sentence about accessibility shifts into an unsupported comment about spending time in nature, while the final sentence repeats the general claim that the farm has changed. Organise the response into an introduction/overview and a paragraph comparing the main site features, using clear references to locations and changes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “solar panels,” “cottages,” “parking site,” “river” and “tracks,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a plan. “Visiting camps” does not clearly describe the camping field, and “far shop” appears to mean “farm shop.” Phrases such as “underpriviliged” and “break free electrcity” are either unsuitable or misspelled, and “advanced much better” is vague. Aim for precise map vocabulary and neutral descriptions, such as “the site was redeveloped,” “a camping field was added,” and “the track was replaced by an internal road.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “But as the time passed” and a relative clause in “where a good time in nature could be spend.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “It was occupied by a patches” has an article/plural mismatch, “A river is also flow” has an incorrect verb form, and “There is now solar panels installed” has faulty agreement and sentence construction. The phrase “could be spend” also needs the past participle “spent.” Practise accurate present and past forms when comparing the two plans, and check agreement and articles in each sentence.
