IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams compares the appearance of the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today, and also shows the changes that took place.
Overall, a significant changes have been made in the park. Major changes can be seen in the area designated for the sheeps. A road has also been constructed in place of the track.
A lot of changes have been made in the area which contained sheeps. Two parking spots have been built; one close to the main road and the other one opposite to it. A camping spot has also been constructed. Furthermore, solar panels have also been installed in the farm.
The holidays cottages were built in place of the barn. The barn was shifted to the end of the triangular track. The farmhouse and the chickens building remained the same. Moreover, a farm shop was built in the start of the farm inside the fruit trees section. The soft fruits and the vegetables section of the farm remained unchanged. The track running in the middle of the farm was replaced by the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation from a track to a road and report several important additions, including parking, camping, solar panels, the farm shop and holiday cottages. You also note that the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain, which helps compare the two plans. This covers the task well overall, with some detail beyond a basic summary. However, the overview is imprecise: the site is a farm, not a “park,” and the major change is broader than the sheep area, involving new visitor facilities and altered access. Some locations are unclear or inaccurate: the shop is between the fruit trees and road, rather than simply “inside” the fruit-tree section, and the cottages replace the former barn area, while the barn is relocated. A clearer overview and more precise spatial comparisons would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable paragraph structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the former sheep area and then the buildings and fields. This gives the reader a basic route through the comparison. However, progression within the body is uneven, and several details are grouped without a clear spatial or chronological logic. For example, the paragraph beginning “A lot of changes…” moves from parking to camping and solar panels, while the final paragraph shifts among cottages, the barn, farmhouse, shop and fields. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” are used, but they do not always clarify how the features relate. Organise details by area or by what changed versus what stayed the same, and use clearer references to locations.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “constructed,” “installed,” “remained unchanged” and “replaced.” These choices communicate the main developments, and terms such as “triangular track” show an attempt to describe layout. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “appearance of the site” is less direct than “layout,” “in the park” misidentifies the farm, and “the start of the farm” does not clearly locate the shop. “Parking spots” and “camping spot” are understandable but less suitable for formal map description than “parking areas” and “camping field.” There is also repetition of “changes” and “built.” More precise location language and a wider set of verbs for additions, relocation and retention would improve flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the area which contained…” and passive constructions such as “have been built” and “was replaced.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “The diagrams compares” should be “The diagrams compare,” and “a significant changes” should be “significant changes.” The repeated plural “sheeps” also needs correction, although this is primarily a word-form issue. The sentence “The holidays cottages were built in place of the barn” needs an article or possessive construction, and “in the start of the farm” is grammatically awkward. Check subject–verb agreement and article use, and proofread sentence boundaries and spacing.
