IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The farm is along a river side, having a road accesses. There is major change internally. As we see back in 1950's there was track access from main road to internal places of farm, the track now turn into road. In 1950's plan, when we enter the farm there were three area division on right side fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables. In present there is only one change with addition of farm shop in fruit trees area. We move forward along the same side we can see an addition of barn before the chiken area. The chikens area and farmhouse same as it was. The old barn space now turn into holiday cottages. We reached the T-junction along side the old sheep area which has a major change all over the farm. We have a parking space now with solar panels area on the back side of parking. Turning left to back to main road side, we have a new space added camping field with the parking space on the entry and exit point of farm. The sheep area back in 1950's is now turn into solar panels area, two parking spaces and camping fields.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad change from a track to a road and mention several new facilities, including the farm shop, holiday cottages, camping field and parking. However, the account is only partly accurate and does not give a clear overview of the main changes. For example, the old sheep area is not simply replaced by solar panels, parking and camping: the camping field and panels are in the north-east, while the former sheep area is not described as a single converted zone. The barn and farmhouse are also confused: the barn remains, while the former barn area becomes holiday cottages. Include a concise overview and compare the main areas systematically, checking each location against the plans.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows a rough route through the farm, using phrases such as “when we enter,” “we move forward” and “turning left.” This gives some sequence to the description, but the route-based narration is not a clear way to organise a map comparison, and the reader has to infer which features are being compared. There are no distinct paragraphs for an overview and the main details, while “same side” and “back to main road side” are unclear references. Group the information by location or by unchanged and changed features, and use direct comparisons such as “The track was replaced by an internal road” to make progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “track,” “main road,” “addition,” “parking space” and “holiday cottages,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or awkward, such as “road accesses,” “three area division” and “addition of barn before the chiken area.” Repeated use of “area,” “space” and “change” also makes the description less precise. Spelling errors in “chiken” and “chikens” are noticeable. Aim for accurate location and change vocabulary, such as “situated,” “replaced,” “converted into” and “to the north-east of,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer structures, for example “As we see back in 1950's there was track access from main road to internal places of farm,” but these are often faulty, and most sentences rely on simple patterns. Errors with articles, plurals, verb forms and sentence construction occur throughout: “there were three area division” and “the track now turn into road” need clearer grammatical forms. The present and past tenses are also not consistently controlled when comparing the two plans. Use past tense for 1950 and present tense for today, and practise accurate comparison patterns, such as “The track has been replaced by a road” and “The farmhouse remains in the same position.”
