The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan depicts the comparison between the location of a farm from 1950 and now. Overall, the farm shows some modern advancements and improvements at the site now than in the past.
If we talk about the image of farm in 1950, it has a road from which four tracks appears significantly. The farm has a wide areas associated for the sheep just behind the tracks. On the border, the farm is covered by river. The riverside has barn and farmhouse which includes chickens as well. By the front track, from the road there are fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables. Collectively, the farm looked sophisticated.
If we talk about today image of the farm site, some changes holds a significant value. It is still covered by the rivers and there is a bridge on the edge of the rive and a road. Now the tracks are replaced by four distinct roads and all the roads collectively lead to the barn. The wide area which was initially spared for the sheep is now divided for various other purposes including a designated space for camping fields and parking. The solar panels are also installed. Fruit trees are still there and by the riverside there is an addition of holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main change from a sheep area to new uses, and note that fruit trees remain, while camping, parking, solar panels and holiday cottages have been added. These are relevant comparisons and your overview recognises that the site has been modernised. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the river does not surround the whole farm, and the map does not show a bridge. The claim that four tracks or roads lead to the barn also misrepresents the layout. Important changes are only briefly reported; for example, the farm shop and the relocation of the barn are omitted, and the continued presence of the farmhouse and chickens could be stated more precisely. More accurate, selective detail would make the account fuller and clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for 1950 and today. This makes the two time periods easy to distinguish, and phrases such as “Overall” and “By the front track” help signal relationships. However, the repeated openings “If we talk about…” sound mechanical, and some links between details are not sufficiently clear. For instance, “The riverside has barn and farmhouse” does not explain their positions in relation to one another, while “all the roads collectively lead to the barn” creates a confusing picture of the layout. Organise each paragraph around areas or changes, and use precise location references to guide the reader through the plans.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing changes and land use, including “designated space,” “divided,” “installed” and “riverside.” The main features are generally understandable, and you attempt more descriptive language such as “modern advancements.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a map report: “sophisticated” is an unsupported judgement, “wide areas associated for the sheep” is awkward, and “four distinct roads” does not accurately describe the plan. Repeated use of “farm,” “area” and “road” also limits precision. Choose neutral, map-focused terms and name the specific land uses and locations rather than relying on broad descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning can be followed. However, some grammatical errors remain in basic structures and agreement. For example, “four tracks appears” should use a plural verb, and “a wide areas” has a mismatch between the article and noun. In “some changes holds a significant value,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the phrasing also needs a more suitable article or plural form. There are also missing articles in “image of farm” and “has barn and farmhouse.” Practise accurate noun phrases, subject–verb agreement and articles, then check each sentence for these patterns while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
