IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given plans gives us information about the Beechwood Farm in 1950 and now.
By looking at the plans, in the year 1950, it shows in the northeast direction it had sheep and next to sheep sector there had track. There had been fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables in the north-west direction. In the east direction, it was barn and farmhouse. It had chickens in the direction of south-east. Moreover, a river in the west direction.
In today's site, there has been a lot of changes occur. The sheep section is divided into four parts, one part which is in the direction of east has solar panels and parking. Moreover, the thrid part has camping field and parking is also available. In addition, the track is converted into road. The barn is shifted and connected to where two roads met. The farmhouse, chickens, vegetables and sofe fruits are remaind same. As well as , the fruit trees has one more section farm shop. The barn is shifted with holidays cottages. The river is also same place.
After analysing the plans, it can be seen that it has postive impact.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the two time periods and mention several relevant features, including the river, farm buildings, crops, and new facilities. However, the account only partially reports the main changes, and some key details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, the sheep area was not divided into four parts: it became a camping field, while solar panels and parking were added elsewhere. The farmhouse, chickens, vegetables, and soft-fruit area are not all unchanged, and the barn’s new position is described confusingly. The final claim of a “positive impact” is unsupported and is not needed for this map summary. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the site’s conversion into a more visitor-oriented farm, then accurately compare the main additions and retained features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: it introduces the plans, describes 1950, moves to the present, and ends with a concluding sentence. This gives the reader a general sense of the comparison. However, progression within the paragraphs is not always clear, and several details are grouped by vague directions rather than by location or type of change. Phrases such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “As well as” are used mechanically, while “The barn is shifted with holidays cottages” makes the relationship between these features difficult to follow. Organise the body around clear comparisons—for example, land use and visitor facilities, followed by buildings and access—and use linking phrases only where they show a precise relationship.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “river,” “track,” “farmhouse,” “solar panels,” and “camping field,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the description imprecise, such as “sheep sector,” “the thrid part,” “sofe fruits,” and “the barn is shifted with holidays cottages.” “Positive impact” is also an unsupported evaluative phrase rather than a precise description of the plans. Aim to use accurate terms for land use and change, and check spelling and collocations. Expressions such as “was converted into,” “was added,” and “remained in the same location” would help you report the map more clearly and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can usually identify the general topic of each sentence. However, grammatical errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to interpret. For example, “The given plans gives us information” has subject–verb disagreement, while “In the year 1950, it shows” shifts awkwardly between past time and present tense. There are also faulty constructions such as “next to sheep sector there had track” and “The farmhouse, chickens, vegetables and sofe fruits are remaind same.” Use consistent past tense for 1950 and present tense for today, and practise complete sentence patterns with articles and correct verb forms. Shorter, carefully controlled comparisons would improve accuracy.
