IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps illustrate the developmental changes in Beechwood Farm that have taken place between 1950 and present day

Overall, the major changes that took place were modification of sheep farm into a camping field with a parking area and a place for solar panels. With addition of holiday cottages and a farm shop.

In 1950, the Beechwood Farm consisted of a sheep farm along the walking track. In between the track and river there were fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables fields. To the southeast of the Beechwood Farm a barn, a farmhouse and a place for chickens were present.

In the present day, the walking track is converted into a road. The sheep farm is transformed into two areas, one is camping field with its allocated parking and the other into a field for solar panels with a parking area. Beside the road, the barn is converted into holiday cottages and the new place for barn is between the junction of two roads. While, the areas for fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and chicken remained unchanged. However, there is an addition of farm shop in the area of fruit trees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main transformation from a sheep-farming area to a site with camping and visitor facilities, and you compare the original and current uses of the land. The overview also notes the addition of holiday cottages and a farm shop, while the body covers the retained fruit, soft-fruit, vegetable and chicken areas. These are relevant, well-selected features. Some details, however, are over-generalised or imprecise: the sheep area becomes a camping field and solar-panel area, but the map also shows two separate parking areas, and the solar panels are not simply a field. The barn is not converted into cottages; the cottages occupy a different position, while the barn is relocated. Clarifying these spatial changes would make the account more fully precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the 1950 plan and a description of today. The progression from the earlier layout to the present one is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In the present day” and “However” help signal the stages of comparison. There is some flexibility in how information is grouped, although the final paragraph becomes a list of changes rather than consistently guiding the reader through locations. The sentence beginning “With addition of holiday cottages” is also a fragment, which interrupts the flow from the overview’s first sentence. Connect it to the preceding sentence and organise current features by area to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “transformed,” “converted,” “junction,” “allocated” and “remained unchanged,” and the meaning is generally clear. This shows adequate range and some attempts at more specific language. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “walking track” is not the label shown, “a place for solar panels” is vague, and “a place for chickens” is less natural than a concise land-use term. “Beside the road, the barn is converted into holiday cottages” also uses “converted” in a way that misrepresents the map’s spatial change. More precise terms such as “internal road,” “solar-panel array” and “chicken enclosure” would improve accuracy and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple statements and more complex forms, including “In between the track and river there were…” and the contrast introduced by “While.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparison, but some grammatical errors remain. The overview’s “With addition of holiday cottages and a farm shop” is a sentence fragment, and “the major changes … were modification” has a number mismatch and needs an article or plural form. Articles are also missing in “between the track and river” and “into a camping field.” The final sentence beginning “While” is not a complete independent sentence. Aim to make each clause part of a complete sentence, and check articles, agreement and singular/plural forms; this will improve control while preserving your range.
