IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The maps illustrate how Beechwood farm has changed 1950 to recent times.
Overall, Beechwood farm has undergone numerous changes from an old fashioned farm to a holiday retreat oriented establishment throughout the years.
In 1950, the farm had a large field for sheep grazing at the north-east side. The track went across the center of the farm. The barn was situated at the south-east part, right next to the track. The area of chicken grazing was at the south-east part, right besides the river, while the farmhouse was located at the south of the barn. The fruit trees were at the north-west part, right besides the main road and the river, followed by the soft fruits, and vegetables.
In recent times, the fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse, chicken grazing area remain exactly where they were in 1950. However, a farm shop has been established right next to the fruit trees and the road, which was previously the track. The area of sheep grazing has been rebuilt as a camping field and a solar field at the north-east part. Two parking areas have been established seperately with one next to the road and solar panels on the north-east, and the other besides the road and the camping field at the north-west. The previous barn was renovated into a holiday cottage, while a new burn was constructed right besides the farmhouse and chicken grazing area at the south-east part.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a clear overview of the farm’s shift towards tourism, and you cover several important changes, including the farm shop, camping field, solar panels, parking and holiday accommodation. This gives the response a relevant, well-focused basis. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the original barn was not converted into cottages; it remains a barn, while the cottages are south of the eastern road. The farmhouse and chickens remain in the same general area, but the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are not all exactly unchanged in position. The description of the 1950 track and the locations of the barn and chickens also needs greater precision. The overview identifies the broad transformation, but a more accurate account of the layout and key changes would make coverage more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into a brief introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the two time periods, so the reader can follow the comparison. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “while” help signal the main relationships between ideas. The progression is generally logical, although the final paragraph lists several developments in a long sequence, making some locations harder to track. For example, the sentence about the two parking areas combines their positions with references to the solar panels and camping field, and the directions are confusing. Grouping changes by area—western fields, northern facilities and eastern buildings—would create clearer progression. More precise referencing would also help distinguish the original barn from the new cottages.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing maps, including “undergone numerous changes,” “established,” “located,” and “situated.” These choices communicate the main developments, and the response attempts some less common phrasing. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “holiday retreat oriented establishment,” “chicken grazing area,” and “solar field” do not describe the features accurately or idiomatically. There are also spelling errors, including “seperately” and “burn,” which should be checked carefully. Aim for concise, conventional map vocabulary and use the labels shown in the plan, such as “solar panels,” “camping field,” and “holiday cottages.” This would improve precision while retaining your current range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the clause beginning “while a new burn was constructed.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following the account. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, though. The opening phrase “has changed 1950 to recent times” is missing a preposition, and “remain exactly where they were” does not agree in tense with the past-time comparison as clearly as it could. There are also awkward article and preposition patterns, such as “at the south of the barn” and “at the south-east part.” Review tense consistency when comparing past and present, and use standard location patterns such as “to the south of” or “in the south-eastern part.”
