Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrates the layout of a farm in 1950 and how it looks today.

Overall, the farm had undergone several changes with the addition of some striking features such as solar panels, parking, farm shop, camping fields.

Features like fruits tress, soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse, chiken remain in the same area as it was in the past. The barn beside the track area in the past is now connected with the roads that was previously the track area. Holidays cottages has been added in the place of barn to make the farm tourst friendly.

Solar panel has been introduced to the farm in place of sheep. Farm shop has been added to the fruit trees section, with parking just opposite to it.The park has become more industrialized with addition of camping field to the site. Another parking area has also contructed just beside the road. The surrounding river around the farm remains unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a relevant comparison and identify several important changes, including the arrival of solar panels, parking, a farm shop and camping, while noting that the river and several agricultural areas remain. The overview also recognises that the site has changed in character. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the solar panels are in the north-east corner, not in place of the sheep field, and the sheep area is replaced by the camping field. The barn has not been replaced by holiday cottages; the cottages are south of the eastbound road, while the barn remains in a different position. Develop the comparison more precisely by describing the new road layout and the relocation or retention of key buildings and land uses.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a brief overview and paragraphs describing retained features and additions. This makes the main comparison reasonably easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Overall,” “in the past” and “Another parking area.” However, the sequence within the final paragraph is somewhat list-like, and some references are difficult to interpret—for example, “The park” appears to mean the farm, while “just opposite to it” does not clearly identify the location of the parking. Grouping changes by area, such as the north-east and the central/eastern buildings, would create a more logical progression. Use clearer location references and connect related changes rather than presenting them as separate observations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a changing site, including “layout,” “addition,” “remain,” “introduced” and “surrounding river.” These choices communicate the general comparison, and some topic-specific terms are used appropriately. However, several word choices or collocations are imprecise, such as “industrialized” for a farm that has added visitor facilities, and “in place of” where the locations do not match. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “fruits tress,” “chiken,” “tourst” and “contructed,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise map language such as “located,” “converted into” and “to the north-east of,” and check spelling and plural forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause “with the addition of…” and the comparison “as it was in the past.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “the roads that was” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “Holidays cottages has been added” has problems with the plural noun and verb agreement. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention in phrases such as “with addition of camping field” and “with parking just opposite to it.” Practise checking agreement, articles and plural forms, and use consistent past and present tenses when comparing the two plans. More accurate control of these patterns would make the comparisons clearer.
