IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan illustrares how Beechwood Farm changed from 1950 to today.
Overall, the farm has seen many infrustructural changes. Before, the farm was just a place to grow crops but now it has become a cozy holiday spot and also a place where they sell their goods. The solar panels also indicate that the farm has shifted for a more modern energy source.
In 1950, the farm only had tracks for transportation but now there have constructed proper roads. There are now two parking areas whereas before there were none. Also, now there is a new camping field and holiday cottages for people who want to spend their holiday here. they have added solar panels to generate energy from them . There are also many infrustructure that have been moved and improved . Before the barn didn't have direct road access but now it has been moved and connected to the road.We can see that the new barn is much smaller than the previous one. The old barn has been used to make holiday cottages instead. Most of the main farming land has remained the same though. Only some area from the fruit trees were used to build a farm shop to sell items.
In conclusion, the farm has been made much more tourist friendly overtime with slide reduction to the main farming infrustructure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the farm has developed from a mainly agricultural site into a place that also serves visitors, with roads, parking, camping, cottages, a shop and solar panels. You also note that much of the farming land remains, which is an important comparison. This gives the response a clear overview and covers the main purpose of the plans. Some details, however, are inaccurate or insufficiently developed: the barn is described as having been moved, whereas the plans show a new, smaller barn in a different position and the former barn site converted to cottages. The claim that the farm was previously “just a place to grow crops” also overlooks sheep and chickens. More precise descriptions of these changes would make the account more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details and a concluding summary. The contrast between “Before” and “now” helps the reader follow the main changes, and the points about visitor facilities are grouped together. However, the body paragraph contains many changes in one long sequence, so the relationship between features is not always clear. Transitions such as “Also” and “There are also” are repetitive, while “In conclusion” largely repeats the overview rather than adding a final comparison. Paragraphing the changes into transport and visitor facilities, then land use and buildings, and using clearer references to the original and present-day features would create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing development, including “parking areas,” “camping field,” “holiday cottages,” “solar panels” and “farming land.” Phrases such as “tourist friendly” communicate the overall change, and the range is adequate to describe the plans. However, several word choices or collocations are imprecise, including “infrastructural changes,” “cozy holiday spot,” “generate energy from them” and “slide reduction.” There are also spelling errors in “illustrares” and “infrustructural,” and “infrastructure” is used awkwardly for individual buildings or facilities. Choose more precise map-description vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; this will make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a relative clause in “people who want to spend their holiday here.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur: “now there have constructed proper roads” needs a passive form (“proper roads have been constructed”), and “they have added solar panels to generate energy from them” has an unclear pronoun reference. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation problems, such as missing spaces after full stops and the lowercase “they” after a full stop. The final phrase “with slide reduction to the main farming infrastructure” is grammatically unclear. Review passive constructions, pronoun reference, and sentence punctuation while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
