IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrates the view of a beechwood farm in 1950 and the changes that have been made till today.

Overall, the major changes that happened throughout the years are the roads, photovoltaic power generation, and a camping field, along with a parking spot.

Looking at the changes, it is noticed that half of the sheep field is utilized for solar panels for renewable energy generation and the other half is used for camping purposes with some tents, they are both facilitated with parking garage of their own. The tracks that connected the whole farm with the highway is now modified to roads. There is a farm shop added infront of fruit trees area beside the road, the barn is shifted in the intersection of roads where a holiday cottage suite is built for the people to spend their vacation.

In contrast, though many infrastructure and buildings has been changed, there are some things that has not been altered all over the years, the fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables are still on the side of the river, the chicken-house and the farmhouse are also in the same place they were before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, and your overview highlights roads, solar panels, camping and parking. You also make useful comparisons by noting that the fruit-growing areas, farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain. These points address the task, but some details are inaccurate or insufficiently clear: the plans do not show that half of the sheep field became solar panels, and the two parking areas are not described as serving the camping and solar areas separately. The barn’s relocation and the cottages’ position could also be stated more precisely. To strengthen the report, describe the main changes by location and distinguish clearly between features that moved, were added or stayed in place.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing additions and a final comparison of unchanged features. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the purpose of each section. However, the third paragraph combines several changes in a long sentence, making the relationships between the sheep area, parking, roads, shop, barn and cottages harder to follow. The reference in “they are both facilitated” is also not fully clear. Grouping changes by area—for example, the western fields and the eastern visitor facilities—and using shorter sentences would make the progression more controlled and the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “photovoltaic power generation,” “renewable energy generation,” “intersection” and “infrastructure.” These choices show an attempt to describe the site precisely, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some expressions are less natural or not quite accurate for a map report: “view of a beechwood farm” is not the usual way to introduce plans, “parking garage” suggests a covered building, and “holiday cottage suite” is awkward. “Shifted” also sounds less precise than a verb describing relocation. Aim for natural collocations and concise map vocabulary, such as “the plans show,” “parking area,” “holiday cottages” and “was relocated.” Check word forms and spelling, including “in front,” to improve accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrastive clause beginning “though” and the sentence describing the fields that remain. The main message is usually clear, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening should be “The plans illustrate,” not “The plans illustrates,” and “the changes that have been made till today” would be more naturally formed with a present-perfect time expression. In “they are both facilitated with,” the pronoun reference and clause connection are unclear; separating the ideas would help. There are also agreement errors in “many infrastructure and buildings has been changed” and “some things that has not been altered.” Review subject–verb agreement, countable and uncountable nouns, and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
