IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps display the transformation of beechwood farm from 1950 to the present time.

Overall, the beechwood farm has undergoes significant changes with the construction of parking, comping feild and solar panels. Another, noticeable feature is that farmland has been tranformed into new parking area over the period.

In 1950, there was sheep area at the front of the road which has been removed. There were tracks that are now change into roads. This farm now has the farm shop and parking when you entered from the west side of road towards the farm. While the shops of fruit, soft and vegetables on the northern side of the river remain relatively the same now, the barn on the south side of the road has been replaced by Holiday Cottages. A new parking has been introduced at the east side of the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad change from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, mentioning parking, a camping field and solar panels. You also note that the sheep area disappeared and that the tracks became roads. However, the account is only partial: the overview does not clearly summarise the main pattern of change, and several details are inaccurate or unclear. The fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables remain in broadly similar locations, but they are fields rather than “shops”; the original barn remains, while the holiday cottages were added south of the eastern road. The response also omits key features such as the farm shop and the camping field’s position. It is 143 words, below the required 150, so the report needs further development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the earlier and present layouts. This gives the reader a general sense of the comparison. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph combines several locations and changes without a clear organising principle. The contrast beginning “While the shops of fruit, soft and vegetables…” is difficult to follow, and “Another, noticeable feature” does not connect smoothly to the previous overview sentence. Use separate, logically grouped descriptions—for example, the western fields and new facilities, followed by the eastern buildings and access roads. More precise referencing and linking would make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “transformation,” “construction,” “replaced” and “introduced,” and the reader can identify several of the changes you intend to describe. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. “Shops of fruit, soft and vegetables” mislabels the fields, while “at the front of the road” is imprecise for a location on a plan. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “comping,” “feild” and “tranformed,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise terms such as “fields,” “plots,” “located” and “converted,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the description more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and more complex comparisons, such as the sentence beginning “While…,” and the main changes are generally understandable. However, errors occur in several sentence patterns and verb forms. For example, “the farm has undergoes” combines an incorrect verb form with the present perfect; use “has undergone.” In “There were tracks that are now change into roads,” the tense and passive construction are faulty; write “the tracks have now been changed into roads.” Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “there was sheep area” and “when you entered.” These errors sometimes make relationships between features difficult to interpret. Practise accurate past-to-present comparisons and review articles, agreement and passive forms.
