IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two plans illustrate the layout of the farm site today and back in 1950.

Overall, Beechwood Farm has undergone a significant transformation, with addition of solar panels, a camping field and a parking area in place of a sheep site, while barn was replace by holiday cottages.

In 1950, the farm had a sheep area, a barn, a farmhouse and chickens, while there was a river flowing near the farm. The farm also included a track, fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables.

At present, the river, fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse and chickens remained unchanged from the original site. The most significant development was the addition of solar panels, a camping field and a parking area in place of a sheep area. The track was converted into a road with relocation of a barn on the junction of a road. The farm shop was added within the area of fruit trees, while a barn was replaced by the holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main changes, identifying new facilities such as the solar panels, camping field and parking, as well as the shift from a track to a road. You also compare features that remain, including the river, crops, farmhouse and chicken enclosure. These points address the task and are generally grounded in the plans. However, some descriptions are over-generalised or imprecise: the 1950 barn was not simply replaced by cottages, since the present plan shows both a barn and holiday cottages, with the barn relocated. Also, the new parking is not wholly in place of the sheep area, and the farm shop is between the fruit trees and road rather than within the fruit-tree area. More exact spatial comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the earlier plan and then the present-day changes. This gives the reader a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1950,” and “At present” make the time comparison easy to follow. The final paragraph brings together several developments effectively. To make the organisation more precise, group related changes by location or by what remained versus what was added, rather than listing many features in one sentence. For example, the sentence beginning “At present” combines unchanged crops and buildings with new facilities and relocated structures, so its relationships become less clear. More explicit links between the old and new positions would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “layout,” “transformation,” “relocation,” “junction,” and “addition,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some flexibility in describing change, particularly in the contrast between features that “remained unchanged” and those that were added. However, a few word choices and collocations are imprecise: “sheep site” is less natural than “sheep area” or “sheep pasture,” and “in place of” suggests a direct replacement that the plans do not consistently show. “On the junction of a road” is also an awkward phrase. Choose terms that describe the map relationships exactly, and vary “addition” and “area” with accurate alternatives such as “introduced” and “field” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “with addition of…” and the contrast introduced by “while.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and the present and past time frames are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “with addition of solar panels,” the article is missing; “the barn was replace” uses the wrong verb form; and “while barn was replaced” also needs an article. The sentence “At present, the river… remained unchanged” shifts awkwardly from a present-time introduction to a past-tense verb. Review articles, passive verb forms and consistent tense when describing the current plan. These corrections would make the otherwise clear comparisons more accurate.
