IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps illustrate the renovation of the site of a farm in 1950 and how it seems at present.

Overall, it is clear that the Beechwood Farm has been made numerous changes in the present. The major change I have seen is that the sheep area has been removed and some new facilities added at the same place, whereas the vegetable area still remains the same.

Firstly, in the fruit tree's location, there is added a new farm shop that connects to the main road. In the sheep space there have been installed some solar panels and created parking areas. On the other hand, a new camping field has been made near the harvested tree.

Secondly, the track has been changed into roads, and the chicken and the farmhouse space still remain unchanged. Moreover, the barn area has been converted into holiday cottages, whereas the new barn location has been made beside the chicken or farmhouse, which connects to the two different sides of the roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the overall shift from a sheep area to new facilities and note that the vegetable plot remains, which gives the response a relevant overview. You also report several key changes, including the farm shop, camping field, roads and holiday cottages. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the shop is between the fruit trees and internal road, rather than connecting to the main road; the solar panels are in the north-east corner, not simply in the former sheep space; and the barn was not converted into cottages, as a new barn remains on the site. The claim that the farmhouse and chickens are unchanged is broadly accurate, but the locations and relationships of the new features need more precise explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs describing changes. Sequencing with “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and contrast markers such as “whereas” and “On the other hand,” helps the reader follow the comparison. However, the organisation within the detail paragraphs is not always easy to track because several locations are grouped together without a consistent spatial route. For example, the sentence about the sheep space combines solar panels and parking, while the final sentence gives an unclear account of the barn’s position. Use a more systematic order—such as west to east, then south—and make references like “the same place” or “the two different sides” explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of map vocabulary, including “facilities,” “converted,” “remains,” and “location,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you describe. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, which limits clarity: “how it seems at present,” “made numerous changes,” “harvested tree,” and “barn location has been made” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Fruit tree’s location” also uses an awkward possessive form for a mapped area. Aim for precise terms such as “the site has undergone several changes,” “fruit-tree area,” and “the barn was relocated.” More accurate vocabulary for positions and land use would help you describe the plan with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a passive construction in “have been installed.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect naturalness and precision. For example, “the Beechwood Farm has been made numerous changes” has an incorrect subject and verb pattern; write “numerous changes have been made to Beechwood Farm.” In “there is added a new farm shop,” the word order and verb form are faulty, and “the chicken and the farmhouse space still remain unchanged” has an awkward singular/plural construction. Review passive forms, articles and agreement, and use straightforward sentence patterns when describing locations. Greater control of these structures would make the comparisons clearer.
