IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams show the comparison between the site of a beechwood farm's structure in 1950 and today.
Overall, at present, much developement is seen at farm with the installation of solar panels, camping field and the making of parking areas around the road. The track has been converted into a road while the barn area has been replaced by holiday cottages.
An analysis of the diagrams shows that much progress has been made at beechwood farm at present as compared to what it was in 1950. Most noticeable changes were the installation of solar panels, building of camping field and the construction of parking areas alongside the road. Moreover, the barn area has been replaced with the holiday cottages and it is rebuilt at the juntion of two roads. In addition, there was a track in 1950 which is now changed with the road. There is also a farm shop near the fruit trees at present which was absent in 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall change as increased development and mention several relevant additions, including solar panels, a camping field, parking, and a farm shop. You also note that the track became a road and that the cottages are a new feature. However, some important changes are not reported accurately: the 1950 barn remains on the site, while the holiday cottages are built south of the eastbound road; a separate barn is located near the southern road junction. The statement that the barn area was replaced by cottages therefore misrepresents the plan. The response also gives little account of features that stayed, such as the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas, farmhouse, and chicken enclosure. A more complete, precise comparison would strengthen the overview and coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing changes. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In addition” help signal the sequence of points. However, the overview and the final paragraph repeat several details, particularly the solar panels, camping field and parking areas, so the progression feels somewhat circular. The final paragraph also combines many changes in one long sequence without grouping them by location or by what was retained versus added. Organising the details into clearer categories—for example, changes around the entrance and fields, followed by development in the eastern area—would make the comparison easier to follow. Some references, such as “the barn area,” are also unclear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing development, including “installation,” “construction,” “replaced,” and “converted.” These choices communicate the general changes, but several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the site of a beechwood farm’s structure,” “much progress has been made at beechwood farm,” and “the making of parking areas.” There are also spelling errors in “developement” and “juntion,” and the farm’s name should be capitalised consistently as “Beechwood Farm.” Repeated use of “at present” and “changes” limits variety. Aim for concise map language and accurate collocations, such as “the farm has been redeveloped” and “parking areas have been added.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview beginning “Overall” and sentences linked with “while” and “which.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “much developement is seen at farm” is missing an article, and “the barn area has been replaced by holiday cottages and it is rebuilt” has an unclear pronoun reference and an awkward shift in structure. In “there was a track in 1950 which is now changed with the road,” the relative clause and passive construction are not well formed. There is also no space after the full stop before “The track.” Use clear past-to-present contrasts, such as “A track in 1950 has since been converted into a road,” and check articles and sentence boundaries.
