IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The maps illustrates how a farm named Beechwood Farm underwent some developments from 1950 till today.
Overall, the farm tranformed into a more advanced structure over the period. Many new structures were built; some of them were constructed before demolishing thr older structure. Only a few features like crops fields remained unchanged.
To begin with, the old track was reconstructed into a solid road, and a little extension of road is built to reach the barn. At the junction of the road with the highway, a parking lot is constructed. In addition, a farm shop is opened at the opposite side of this parking. Besides, another parking area is designed at the end of the near the solar panels.
Furthermore, the whole area at north side of the track was allocated for sheeps is now divided into two parts; one for camping field, and another for solar panels. Barn is shifted near to crop field, and in its place holiday cottages were built. Collectively, the space for chickens and a farm house did not undergo any change as time passed by. Moreover, in the new map crop fields are still distributed into three separate parts i.e. fruits trees, soft fruits, and vegetables.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the farm’s development, noting the addition of new facilities and the continued presence of the crop fields. You also report several key changes accurately: the former sheep area becomes a camping field and solar-panel area, and holiday cottages appear near the farmhouse. This addresses the main features of the plans. However, some details are imprecise or over-generalised. The farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in the same general area, but the barn is not simply “shifted near to crop field”; it is relocated to the south-west of the farmhouse, while the cottages occupy the area where the barn stood. The road and parking descriptions could also be clearer about their positions. More precise comparisons would make the account better supported throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore” help signal progression, and the reader can follow the broad transformation from the old plan to the current one. The overview also gives the report a useful organising focus. However, some links are mechanical, and several references are unclear. For example, “another parking area is designed at the end of the near the solar panels” does not clearly identify which road or area is meant, while “in its place” requires the reader to infer the barn’s former location. Grouping changes by location and using clearer references would improve cohesion and make the progression more consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “reconstructed,” “allocated,” “divided,” and “distributed,” and the main meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expressions for change, such as “underwent some developments” and “did not undergo any change.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “advanced structure” is vague, “solid road” is not a precise description of the change, and “parking lot is constructed” is less suitable than a neutral map-reporting phrase. Spelling and word-form slips such as “tranformed,” “thr,” “sheeps,” and “fruits trees” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple sentences and more complex forms, including the contrast in “Many new structures were built; some of them…” and the clause beginning “Furthermore, the whole area…”. Most sentences remain understandable, so errors rarely prevent the reader from following the account. However, some grammatical problems recur. The opening should be “The maps illustrate,” and “from 1950 until today” would be a more controlled time construction. In “a little extension of road is built,” the article and tense are problematic; the report should consistently describe the present plan in the present tense or changes in the past. The sentence about the former sheep area also has faulty structure (“was allocated for sheeps is now divided”). Review agreement, articles, tense consistency, and sentence boundaries.
