IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map illustrate the architectural transformation that has been occurred at Beechwood Farm from 1950 to present day.

Overall, the farm has been changed drastically from a traditional agricultural business into a modern place. While the fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, farmhouse fields stayed the same.

In detail, the area where sheep were farmed changed by installing solar panels, two parking areas on the left and right down corners of the road along with a camping field in the middle of parking.

On the other hand, on the west-side of the road along with farm trees a farm shop has been introduced. There is the major change on the east-side of the road on the bottom where the barn was previously located had replaced by holiday cottages for tourism, and the barn shifted near the triangular diversion of the road. A second parking lot was also been added on the opposite side of the road near the solar panels were located.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad change from an agricultural farm to a more visitor-oriented site, and you mention several relevant additions, including solar panels, camping, a farm shop and holiday cottages. However, some key comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. The fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse and chickens remain, but the response groups these as “fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, farmhouse fields” and does not clearly report the continued soft-fruit area. The parking locations are also misdescribed: one is near the main-road junction and the other beside the eastern road, rather than at the “left and right down corners.” Your overview gives a useful general contrast, but should more precisely summarise what stayed and what changed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. This gives the reader a basic progression from the general transformation to changes in different parts of the site. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal the stages of the description. However, the contrast introduced by “On the other hand” is not fully clear, and several long sentences combine multiple locations and changes, making the relationships harder to follow. For example, the sentence about the eastern road, former barn and cottages contains several ideas without a clear sequence. Organise details by area and use clearer references such as “to the north-east” and “further south” to make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing change and location, including “transformation,” “introduced,” “shifted,” “east-side” and “triangular diversion.” These choices help communicate the main developments, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “architectural transformation” is not the most suitable description of changes to a farm’s land use, while “farm trees” and “parking lot” are less accurate or less appropriate than the map’s labels. “Changed drastically” and “modern place” are also broad rather than precise. Aim to use the plan’s terminology consistently and choose verbs that describe the specific change, such as land being converted, facilities being added, or a building being relocated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “While” and a relative clause describing the former barn location. Some errors remain in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “The map illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, and “has been occurred” uses an incorrect passive construction. The sentence beginning “While the fruit trees…” is a fragment, while “the barn was previously located had replaced” lacks a correctly formed main clause. There are also problems in “was also been added” and “near the solar panels were located.” These errors sometimes make relationships difficult to interpret, although the overall message can usually be followed. Practise complete clauses and accurate past-to-present comparisons.
