Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given maps illustrate the layout of a farm how it was renovated in 1950 and how it is renovated now.
Overall, there are few changes in present farm as in past the the sheep area is located in eastern side is replaced by solar panels. Therefore some minor changes also happened.
On the one hand, in 1950 the eastern is empty only sheep farm was located nevertheless, this side is covered by solar panels and camping area beside with parking area. In previous farm the western side was empty looking at present the farm shop and another parking area is added. However in past the barn located in eastern side is replaced by holiday cottages therefore the farm-house and chickens area were remains same. Consequently in 1950 the track located in middle is changed to road to match both parking areas. Although rest of the things located in west south area were remains same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several relevant changes, including the addition of solar panels, a camping area, parking, a farm shop and holiday cottages, and note that the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: the sheep area was in the north, not the east, and the farm has undergone substantial changes rather than “few” or “minor” ones. The barn was not replaced; it remains, but is in a different position relative to the farmhouse and road. Your statement that the western side was empty also overlooks the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, which largely remain. To make the summary more complete, describe the main pattern of change accurately and compare the locations of the key features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, an attempted overview and a body paragraph, and phrases such as “Overall” and “On the one hand” show an effort to guide the reader. However, the progression is difficult to follow because several changes are packed into long sentences, and the contrast between past and present is not consistently signposted. For example, “In previous farm the western side was empty looking at present…” combines separate observations without a clear relationship. Some linking expressions, including “Therefore” and “Consequently,” do not clearly express the connection between the ideas that follow. Organise the details into clearer groups—such as the western fields and new facilities, then the central and eastern buildings—and use simpler, more precise transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “layout,” “solar panels,” “camping area,” “parking area” and “holiday cottages,” so the reader can recognise many of the features being compared. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the description unclear. “Renovated” is repeated and does not naturally describe how a site’s layout changed; “empty” misrepresents areas containing fields or buildings, while “this side” is vague. There are also collocation problems such as “camping area beside with parking area.” Aim for precise map language, including terms such as “located,” “converted,” “added” and “retained,” and name the relevant area rather than relying on vague references.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, using contrast and time references, but errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between features hard to understand. Examples include “how it was renovated in 1950,” “the the sheep area is located,” and “the farm-house and chickens area were remains same.” Verb forms and agreement are also problematic in “the barn located in eastern side is replaced” and “the track located in middle is changed to road.” Several sentences run together, with punctuation that does not clearly separate the ideas. Practise accurate past and present passive forms for map changes, such as “was replaced by” and “has been converted into,” alongside straightforward sentences with correct articles and subject–verb agreement.
