Student answer (Band 5.5)

The Diagram shows the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site currently.

In 1950, the site had different sections like Fruit trees, Soft fruits and Vegetables. There is a large space allocated for chickens and even a larger space for sheeps . In the chicken area, there's a farmhouse and a Barn aswell. All of those sections are connected to a Track that spans all across the site dividing the area of sheeps and all other sections. There is a river that connects all accross the site going from behind the fruits and chickens sections. There's a freeway/highway as well nearby the site.

Currently, there have been many recent developments in the site. There is a new Farm shop near the fruit trees. The barn's been moved nearby the Vegetables section. In place of Barn, holiday cottages are built. The area for sheeps has been allocated for other purposes like Parkings, Camping Field, Solar Panels, etc. The Track has been converted into a proper road for travelling. The freeway/highway is still the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two time periods and report several relevant changes, including the farm shop, the road upgrade, and new uses for the former sheep area. However, the account is only partially complete and some details are inaccurate: the barn has not been moved near the vegetables; it remains in the southern part of the site, southwest of the farmhouse. The cottages are south of the eastbound road, not simply in place of the barn. The overview also misses the continued presence of the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable plots and the farmhouse and chicken area. Develop a clearer summary of the main transformations and describe locations more precisely to make the comparison more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a basic chronological order, first describing 1950 and then the present, so the reader can recognise the comparison being made. However, the information is grouped into only two broad blocks, and the first paragraph moves quickly between plots, buildings, tracks and the river without a clear organising focus. Linking phrases such as “In 1950” and “Currently” help, but connections within the descriptions are often loose; for example, “All of those sections are connected to a Track” does not clearly explain how the site is arranged. Use a brief overview followed by organised comparisons of the western and eastern areas, and use location references to guide the reader through each plan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “sections,” “allocated,” “converted,” and “developments,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you intend to describe. However, the range is limited and some choices are imprecise or informal for an academic report. “Freeway/highway” is not the label shown; “main road” is more accurate, while “Parkings” is not the appropriate form for the two parking areas. “Sheeps” is also an incorrect plural, and “spans all across” is awkward. Aim for precise terms for map features and avoid conversational wording such as “there’s” and “etc.” This would make the description more natural and exact without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “The area for sheeps has been allocated for other purposes like Parkings, Camping Field, Solar Panels, etc.” The main meaning is usually understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “There is a large space … and even a larger space” shifts awkwardly between present and past description, while “All of those sections are connected to a Track” uses a present-tense form in the 1950 account. The sentence beginning “In the chicken area” also makes the farmhouse and barn’s locations unclear. Work on consistent past tense for 1950, accurate articles and plurals, and clearer sentence boundaries. More controlled complex sentences would help express comparisons and locations.
