IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps demonstrate how the site of a farm changed from 1950 to today.
Overall, it can be seen that major development took placed in northeast side of beechwood farm, with solar panels, camping field, and parking facility introduced in new map. While former track replaced by road, soft fruits and vegetables remain as it was. Southeast side of farm also observed significant changes.
In 1950, northern side of the farm largerly devoted for sheep, while central area consisted with fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables. There was a track between those areas. East side of farm occupied with Barn, and farmhouse located just below it, and chickens too. River starts from southeast part and spread towards northwest side of the farm.
Today, significant changes can be observed in plan. The former sheep area tranformed with many facilities, at top of the northeast corner, solar planes installed. Parking is built in both north and east side of the farm, while central area of sheep changed into cmaping field and a tree. On the east side, holiday cottages took place barn, which relocated with small space just below road end in the south. A small space allocated to farm shop from fruit trees in the latest plan. Other rest of the area remains as it was earlier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a clear overview of the main transformation, noting the new facilities in the north-east and the replacement of the track by a road, and you compare several features across the two plans. The account of the former sheep area becoming a camping field and the addition of solar panels, parking and a farm shop is relevant. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barn was not simply relocated to a small space below the road end; it is shown south-west of the farmhouse at the southern road junction. The river’s course is also described imprecisely, and the statement that the rest of the area remains unchanged overlooks the road layout and holiday cottages. More precise coverage of these changes would make the summary more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the 1950 plan and then the present-day layout. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the comparison. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1950,” and “Today” help signal the stages. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly “Other rest of the area remains as it was earlier,” which does not specify what is being referred to and conflicts with the changes described. The overview also groups several features together without clearly distinguishing the north-east from the eastern and central areas. Use clearer spatial references and connect each comparison directly to its location to strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of map vocabulary, including “devoted,” “facilities,” “relocated,” and “allocated,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you describe. There is some attempt to vary wording rather than repeat “changed.” However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “solar planes” is not the correct term for the panels, “cmaping” is misspelled, and “took place barn” is an unnatural way to describe replacement. Phrases such as “parking facility introduced in new map” and “central area of sheep” are also imprecise. Aim for accurate collocations and standard map terms, such as “was converted into,” “was replaced by,” and “parking areas.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “While former track replaced by road” and the overview sentence beginning “Overall.” The main message is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur in articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “major development took placed” should use the correct past-tense form, while “soft fruits and vegetables remain as it was” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “northern side … largerly devoted for sheep,” the sentence needs a clearer grammatical structure and appropriate prepositions. Several clauses also omit articles or finite verbs, as in “East side of farm occupied with Barn.” Check that each sentence has a complete verb phrase and that subjects and verbs agree.
