IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The below two map illustrates about the beechwood farm site in two different timeline. one was 1950 , and another is the same site.
Overall , the farm has facing significant development, changing from a mainly agricultural area into a place that also provides tourist facilities and renewable energy. However, several farming areas, the farmhouse, the chickens and the river have remained unchanged.
In 1950, the farm consisted mainly of agricultural land, including areas for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables in the western and central parts of the site. A large sheep field aquired the northern and eastern sections. In the south-eastern area, there was a barn, a farmhouse and a separate enclosure for chickens. A network of tracks connected the different areas, while a river ran along the southern boundary of the farm.
Today, several major changes can be seen. The former sheep field has been developed into a camping field and an area containing solar panels in the northern and north-eastern parts. A farm shop and a parking area have also been added near the fruit trees and the main road. Furthermore, the old tracks have been replaced by roads, and additional parking facilities and holiday cottages have been constructed in the eastern part of the site. The barn has been moved further south, while the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in approximately the same area. The fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and river have also been retained.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response gives a clear overview of the farm’s shift from agriculture towards tourism and renewable energy, while identifying features that remain, including the crops, farmhouse, chicken enclosure and river. It also selects relevant details from both plans, such as the new camping field, solar panels, farm shop, parking and cottages. This is a well-supported account of the main changes. One factual imprecision is the claim that the sheep field occupied the “northern and eastern sections”; the plan places it north of the track, while the eastern area contains the buildings and tracks. The statement that the barn “has been moved further south” is also a little too definite: its position has changed, but the comparison would be clearer if described relative to the farmhouse and road junction. Overall, the task is addressed effectively, with only some over-generalisation in location details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the 1950 layout and a final paragraph on present-day changes. This progression makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “while” help connect ideas. The contrast between retained features and new facilities is also handled logically. To make the cohesion more flexible and precise, avoid grouping several locations into broad phrases such as “western and central parts” or “northern and north-eastern parts” when the map allows more exact relationships. The opening sentence is awkwardly constructed, and the extra space before “facing” interrupts its flow. More precise referencing and a cleaner introduction would strengthen an otherwise coherent account.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “agricultural land,” “renewable energy,” “enclosure,” “retained” and “constructed.” These choices help distinguish the farm’s original use from its newer facilities, and the meaning remains clear throughout. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “two different timeline” is not idiomatic, “a large sheep field acquired the northern and eastern sections” uses the wrong verb, and “facing significant development” is an awkward phrase in this context. “Additional parking facilities” is understandable but could be more directly expressed as a second parking area. Greater control of collocation and more exact spatial vocabulary would add the flexibility and precision needed for a stronger performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “while a river ran along the southern boundary” and the present-perfect construction “have been retained.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparison, and the paragraphing supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening has a subject–verb agreement problem (“The below two map illustrates”) and an incomplete, awkwardly joined construction (“one was 1950, and another is the same site”). The overview also contains an unnecessary gap before “facing,” and “in two different timeline” has a number/article problem. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but more reliable control of agreement, articles and sentence formation is needed. Proofreading the opening carefully would be a useful priority.
