Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the changes that took place of beechwood farm between 1950 and present day.
Overall, the farm undergoes several changes, becoming more buil-up, making better use of the available space, while some of them remained unchanges, others were renovated /replaced. Whereas, several new facilities were added.
In 1950, the farm was consisted of a large sheep pasture was situated into the northern of the farm. Crop fields namely fruit trees was on the westnorth, soft fruits and vegetables were in the middle, in the southern. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation: the former sheep area becomes a camping field and solar panels are added, while the farm gains a shop, parking and holiday cottages. The overview also recognises that some features remain and others are replaced, and most locations are broadly consistent with the plans. This gives a relevant account of both dates. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the 1950 crop plots are not all “in the middle” or “in the southern” area, and the barn is described as shifting without clearly stating that it is relocated to the road junction. The claim that the farmhouse, chickens and river are unchanged is broadly supported, but the account could compare the road layout and the new facilities more precisely. More complete, clearly located comparisons would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and separate descriptions of the two plans. This helps the reader follow the broad change from 1950 to today. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several features are compressed into one sentence, as in “Crop fields namely fruit trees was on the westnorth, soft fruits and vegetables were in the middle, in the southern.” Some linking expressions are also awkward or contradictory: “Whereas” begins a fragment, while “Conversaly” introduces features said to have remained unchanged. Organise details by area or by what changed and what stayed the same, and use simpler, more accurate links. Clearer referencing and less crowded sentences would make the overall arrangement more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “pasture,” “facilities,” “junction,” “replaced” and “constructed,” and you attempt to distinguish additions from features that remain. This provides a workable range for describing the plans. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “buil-up,” “repalced,” “pannel,” “trackes” and “Conversaly.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “crop fields namely” and “a solar pannel system installed with parking facilites.” These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Check spelling carefully and learn common map collocations, such as “a field was converted into” and “a facility was added.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “a large sheep pasture was situated.” However, control is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “the farm was consisted of” uses an incorrect verb pattern, and “a large sheep pasture was situated into the northern” has faulty structure and preposition use. Agreement and sentence construction are also problematic in “fruit trees was” and “holiday cottages has been constructed.” The overview’s “Whereas” clause is incomplete, and punctuation around “renovated /replaced” is unclear. Practise accurate past and present passive forms, subject–verb agreement, and complete sentence patterns before adding more complex clauses.
