IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram compares the development taken place at Beechwood farm from 1950 untill today. It shows how the farm built its infrastructure and adopted to the modern requirements by effeciently using its land. It is also quite fascinating to see that the the farm has now a place for recreational stays aswell.
Firstly, the largest area of the farm that was allocated for sheeps in the past is now used for multiple purposes, providing area for camping field and solar panels, while allocating two blocks for parking, one at the entrance and other just opposite to the holiday cottages. The holiday cottages were converted from a barn which is now shifted at the end of the right intersection of road. Whereas the old walking track is now replaced with a road to make easy access for vehicles to visit inside the farm.
Next we notice the farm shop which is placed in the fruit trees lot, which is located just by the entrance. The benefit of farm shop being near the entrance is that poeple passing by the farm can stop and make a purchase without travelling all the way inside the farm.
To conclude, we can say that the Benwood farm has shown interest in attracting tourism and farm stay lovers by creating camp sites and cottages. Also they have focused on the energy consumption by adding solar panels in the farm. While keeping the Vegetable, Soft Fruit, Chickens lot and farmhouses area unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation from a sheep-grazing area to a site with camping, solar panels and parking, and you note that the track became a road. These are relevant comparisons, and your concluding point about tourism and energy use gives the response a clear overall direction. However, some details are inaccurate: the holiday cottages were not converted from the barn; they occupy a separate area, while the barn was relocated. The farm shop is between the fruit trees and the internal road, not simply within the fruit-tree plot. The claim that the vegetable, soft-fruit and chicken areas are unchanged is also too broad, as their positions and surrounding access have changed. More precise coverage of the relocated buildings and retained land uses would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to changes in the northern area, then the farm shop, and finally a summary. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Next” help guide the reader, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. However, the organisation is not consistently based on clear spatial groupings or a systematic comparison of 1950 with today. The paragraph about the shop also shifts into an unsupported explanation of why its location is beneficial, rather than reporting the map. “To conclude” repeats some earlier points, while the final sentence beginning “While” is not smoothly connected to the preceding one. Grouping changes by area and using clearer references would make progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “infrastructure,” “recreational stays,” “holiday cottages,” “intersection” and “solar panels,” which helps describe the development. Some less common expressions are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “development taken place,” “adopted to the modern requirements,” and “walking track” do not express the intended map changes precisely. There are also spelling errors such as “untill,” “effeciently” and “poeple,” and “sheeps” is not the correct plural form. The meaning is generally recoverable, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would improve precision. Prefer neutral map-reporting language over evaluative phrases such as “quite fascinating.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “which is located just by the entrance” and a contrast introduced by “while.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the development taken place” is missing an auxiliary, and “the farm has now a place” uses an awkward word order. The sentence beginning “The holiday cottages were converted from a barn” also has a tense and meaning problem in context. In addition, “While keeping the … area unchanged” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Check articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries, and make sure subordinate clauses are attached to a complete main clause.
