Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given map illustrates the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

In detail, in 1950, the main track of the farm had attached to to the main road. The biggest area of the farm was the sheep posture which was on the right side of the main track. The area for fruit trees was just close to the main road. As the main track continues we reached the soft fruits area. There was a triangular center point in the mid of the farm. There was a section for vegetables where they were grown in the past. At the end of the track there was Barn. At the lowe end there was Chickens cops. Between Cops and Barn there was Farmhouse.

In contemporary era, the main track of the farm is at the same position. At the start of the track now there is a addition of farm shop in the fruit trees section. At the corner of the main road and farm track there is a parking place. Very next to the parking there is a camping field. At the back side of the camping field solar panels are placed. Section for soft fruits and vegetables are at the same position. The barn is now move under the triangular center of teh farm. Chickens, farmhouse and holidays cottages are next to the barn. Opposite to cottages there is parking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two time periods and report several relevant features, including the sheep area, the farm shop, parking, camping and solar panels. However, the account is largely a list of locations rather than a clear summary of the main changes, and it gives no overview of how the farm has been redeveloped. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep pasture is north of the track, not on its right; the farm shop is between the fruit trees and internal road, rather than within the fruit-tree area; and the barn is south-west of the farmhouse, not simply “under” the junction. The claim that the farmhouse, chickens and cottages are next to the barn also misrepresents their positions. Group the major changes and describe locations more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is divided into paragraphs for 1950 and today, which gives the reader a basic chronological structure. You also use some sequencing expressions, such as “At the end of the track” and “At the start of the track.” However, the description does not progress consistently from one area of the plan to another, and several points are presented as disconnected statements. Phrases such as “As the main track continues we reached” shift awkwardly between present and past, while “At the lowe end” is unclear. The repeated use of “there was” and “there is” makes the account feel list-like. Organise each paragraph by location—for example, the western fields, northern additions, and central buildings—and use clearer links to show what changed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “main road,” “fruit trees,” “soft fruits,” “vegetables,” and “solar panels,” so the reader can recognise many of the features. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the locations difficult to understand. “Sheep posture” appears to mean “sheep pasture,” and “Chickens cops” does not clearly describe the chicken enclosure. Expressions such as “triangular center point,” “at the back side,” and “the barn is now move under” are not suitable descriptions of map positions. Use precise terms such as “junction,” “north-east of,” “south-west of,” and “enclosure,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including “As the main track continues we reached the soft fruits area,” but control is inconsistent and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. For example, “had attached to to the main road” has an incorrect verb pattern and repeated preposition; “there is a addition” has an article error; and “The barn is now move” uses the wrong verb form. Tense also shifts within descriptions, as in “continues” and “reached,” and articles are missing in “there was Barn.” Most sentences follow a basic subject–verb pattern, with limited accurate complex structures. Practise consistent present or past tense for each map and check articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
