Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans illustrates the layout of Beechwood farm in 1950 and how it is upgraded after development.

Overall, it is clear that old plan reveals that Beechwood farm plan was built orginalpurpose was only on horticulture and animal husbandry, but recent development has also focused on recreational activities for guests.

In 1950, Beechwood farm had it main focus on animal husbandry dedicating substantial amount of farmland to grazing sheeps towards north-east of the plan. In south- east side for cattle a farm house for residents, and also a chicken pen for eggs and farming. While in the north east side for horticulture with dedicated plots for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables for agricultural produce. A river circumferenced the farm acting as natural water and also acting as a boundary.

The current Beechwood farm redevelopment has divided the sheep grazing ground into three sections such as solar panels, open camping ground and two vehicle parking. In the south-east corner of the farm the old barn is now coverted into holiday cottages for visitors, while leaving farmhouse and Chicken pen untouched and a small barn was built connecting it to the internal road. The horticulture areas remained largely unchanged, except for farm shop which was built near the mainroad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main change well: the farm has expanded from agricultural use to include visitor facilities, and you compare the 1950 layout with today. The overview captures this shift, while details such as the sheep area becoming a camping field, solar panels and parking, and the addition of a farm shop are relevant. However, some descriptions are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep ground is not divided into three sections, and the barn is not described as having been converted into cottages; the cottages are south of the eastbound road, while a barn remains elsewhere on the site. The claim that the farmhouse and chicken area were left untouched is broadly supported, but the locations of the original plots and buildings need more precise comparison. This covers the task well overall, though some features are less fully and accurately developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a summary of the main change, and separate descriptions of the earlier and current plans. This makes the comparison easy to follow in broad terms. You also use basic linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1950,” and “while.” However, some connections are awkward or unclear, particularly “In south-east side for cattle a farm house…” and “In the south-east corner…,” which makes the spatial relationships difficult to track. The final paragraph also moves quickly between the sheep area, cottages, the farmhouse and horticulture without a clear route through the plan. Organise each description by area or by feature, and use clearer references such as “to the north-east” and “south of the farmhouse” to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “horticulture,” “animal husbandry,” “grazing,” “recreational activities,” and “redevelopment.” These choices help convey the farm’s changing functions, and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some less common expressions are not used naturally or precisely: “circumferenced the farm” is unsuitable for describing the river’s position, and “natural water” does not clearly express its role as a boundary. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “orginalpurpose,” “sheeps,” and “coverted,” as well as imprecise phrases such as “two vehicle parking.” Aim for accurate collocations and standard map-description vocabulary, for example “ran along the boundary,” “a grazing area for sheep,” and “two parking areas.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “which was built near the mainroad.” However, grammatical control is uneven, and several sentences are incomplete or have faulty structure. For example, “In south-east side for cattle a farm house for residents” lacks a clear main verb, while “In 1950, Beechwood farm had it main focus…” has an incorrect possessive form and an awkward sentence pattern. There are also agreement and article problems in “The plans illustrates” and “a substantial amount,” and the opening overview shifts awkwardly between past and present forms. Build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, check singular/plural agreement, and use consistent past and present tenses when comparing the two plans.
