Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans compare how the location of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today.

Overall, the farm has undegone various changes. The area that was designated for the sheep was reallocated for solar panels, parking and a camping field. However, the river remains in the same location and the track was converted to a road.

In 1950, the area to the North East of the farm was set aside for sheep rearing, this was later divided to three sections. Currently, this area is occupied by solar panels, a camping field and some parking. The track was converted to a road but remained in the same location.

The area between the track and the road also underwent significant changes. The barn was moved to the area to the south of the junction of the two roads. some fruit trees were cut down to give some space to construct a farm shop. Soft fruits, vegetables, chickens and the farmhouse remained unchanged. However, holiday cottages were constructed on the Eastern part of the farm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation from a sheep area to facilities including solar panels, camping and parking, and correctly note that the river remains and the track becomes a road. You also report changes to the barn and the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep area was north of the track, not “to the North East of the farm”; the fruit trees were not simply cut down, as the plan still shows them; and the farmhouse, chickens, and productive fields are not all unchanged, since the barn’s position and the surrounding road layout also changed. The overview is relevant, but a more precise account of the site’s major changes and retained features would make coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the earlier and current layouts. The sequence from the northern area to the central and eastern parts is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Currently” help signal relationships. Some connections are less clear, though. “The area between the track and the road” is difficult to locate because the road and track are not clearly distinguished, and “this area” in the next paragraph has an uncertain reference. The repeated focus on the sheep area in the overview and body also uses space without adding much detail. More precise spatial signposting and clearer references would make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of map-description vocabulary, including “reallocated,” “occupied,” “converted,” “constructed,” and “remained unchanged.” These choices allow you to describe both development and continuity, and the meaning is generally clear. Some wording is imprecise or does not collocate naturally: “the location of Beechwood Farm” suggests the farm itself moved, while “some fruit trees were cut down to give some space” is an unsupported and awkward description of the map change. “The area to the North East of the farm” is also an imprecise location label. Aim for more exact spatial terms and concise, map-focused phrasing; check spelling such as “undegone” and avoid repeating “some.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

There is a useful mix of simple and more complex forms, including the passive constructions “was reallocated” and “were constructed,” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparison, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening sentence is incomplete as written: “The plans compare how the location of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today” needs a main verb construction such as “has changed.” In “the area … was set aside for sheep rearing, this was later divided,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “North East,” and “some” begins a sentence without a capital. Greater control of sentence boundaries and complete clause structures would strengthen accuracy.
