IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram compares how a farm look liked when it was intially built in 1950 and its current look after developments.

Overall, the site went through significant changes with the most notable one the addition of a camping field, two parking lots, and track being replaced by road. There is no change to the river or the road crossing over the river.

In 1950, farm was encircled by a river and there were three plots of fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables along the river. There was also a track which passes through the farm and to the north of that road a separate place for sheeps. Between the track and river, there was a farmhouse, barn and chickens.

At present, sheep area has been removed from the site and replaced by a camping field along with a parking space connected to the main road which goes over the river. There are frames of solar panels and another small parking area on the east side of the farm. Besides that, fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables plots remain on the previous locations. The track which passed through the farm is now used as road. The location of barn has been changed and a holiday cottages has been build at its previous location.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the former track network becomes roads, and new facilities such as camping, parking, solar panels and holiday cottages appear. You also note that the three crop areas remain, which is an important comparison. The overview is relevant, but the statement that the farm was “encircled by a river” is inaccurate: the river borders the south-western and southern edges rather than surrounding the whole site. Some details are also unclear or misplaced, particularly the claim that the farmhouse, barn and chickens were between the track and river. The account covers the key changes, but would be stronger with more precise descriptions of where the new facilities are and how the buildings’ positions changed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two chronological detail paragraphs, so the reader can follow the comparison from 1950 to today. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1950,” “At present” and “Besides that” help signal the stages of the description. The progression is generally logical, although some references are not sufficiently clear: “the north of that road” and “its previous location” require the reader to infer which feature or building is meant. The final paragraph also moves quickly between several changes. Grouping the present-day developments by area, and using more precise references such as “the former barn site,” would make the connections between details smoother and more exact.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “plots,” “encircled,” “replaced,” “connected” and “location,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision. “When it was initially built” suggests the map shows the farm’s construction, rather than its layout in 1950; “current look” is informal; and “frames of solar panels” does not describe the panels naturally. “Sheeps” is an incorrect plural, while “parking lots” is less appropriate here than “parking areas.” Aim for consistent, precise terms such as “site,” “field,” “road” and “facility,” and check collocations and word forms when describing map features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast between the former track and present road. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “a farm look liked” has an incorrect verb form, “farm was” and “sheep area has been removed” omit necessary articles, and “a holiday cottages has been build” contains errors in number and verb form. There is also a tense mismatch in “a track which passes” when describing 1950. Use past simple consistently for the earlier plan and present simple or present perfect for the current layout, and check articles, agreement and past participles. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your sentence variety.
