IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two plans illustrate the transformation that have occurred in the location of a form from 1950 to the present day.
Overall, it is clear that the open area for sheep has now been completely covered by solar panels, camping field, and parking. Moreover, the track has redeveloped into road, and other facilities such as holiday cottage and farm shop has been added.
Looking at the top of the map, the area for sheep which was completely open has undergone a big development. To the top right side of the plan solar panels are placed and a parking area just below the solar panels is constructed. Next to the solar system a camping field is introduced with a tree. Another parking can be seen besides footpath.
The barn has been shifted alongside the road track and a holiday cottages has been constructed in place of it. A farm shop has been added in the area of the fruit trees. Some facilities such as farmhouse, chickens, soft fruits, and vegetables remained unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a relevant overview of the main changes, noting the loss of the sheep area, the conversion of tracks into roads, and the addition of visitor facilities. You also identify several retained features, including the farmhouse, chickens, soft fruits and vegetables. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep area is not completely covered by solar panels, camping and parking; these facilities occupy only parts of the former open area. The barn has not been shifted alongside the road, and the holiday cottages are south of the eastbound road, not simply “in place of” the barn. The description also omits the farm shop’s position between the fruit trees and road. More precise comparisons of locations and changes would make the account more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The sequence from the upper part of the plan to the buildings and fields gives the reader a basic route through the changes, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Looking at the top” help signal stages. However, the organisation is not always easy to follow because several locations are described imprecisely, particularly the barn and cottages, and “Another parking can be seen besides footpath” does not clearly identify which parking area or road is meant. The final sentence groups unchanged features together without explaining their positions. Use clearer spatial references and organise details by area or by changed versus retained features to improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “transformation,” “constructed,” “introduced,” “remained unchanged” and “alongside.” These choices help communicate the broad development of the site, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “location of a form” appears to mean “farm,” “covered by” suggests the sheep area is entirely occupied by the new facilities, and “redeveloped into road” is not a natural way to describe the track’s change. “Solar system” is also less precise than “solar panels,” while “besides footpath” does not accurately name the route shown. Aim for exact map vocabulary and natural collocations, especially when describing land use and relative position.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the relative clause “which was completely open.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In the opening, “transformation that have occurred” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “a farm” is needed rather than “a form.” In “holiday cottage and farm shop has been added,” the plural subject requires “have,” and “a holiday cottages” combines an article with a plural noun. The phrase “the barn has been shifted … and a holiday cottages has been constructed” also creates an unclear relationship between the two changes. Check agreement, articles and singular/plural forms, and use clearer sentence structures when comparing features.
