IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given plans show changes made in the site of Beechwood farm from 1950 till today.

Overall, the current site includes substantial additions which did not exist in 1950. It can be observed that track has been completely replaced by road. Similarly, the area of sheep has been modified with new developments today. On the other hand, vegetables, soft fruits and fruit trees have remained at the same place except a farm shop alongside fruit trees which was not present in 1950.

In 1950, the site looked relatively spacious with few developments, the sheep area was widespread with barn, farmhouse and chickens below it. There was no road but only a track in 1950 with vegetables, soft fruits and fruit trees on the left side of the sheep area.

While in the current site, sheep aream which was completely vacant previously has now been crowded with solar panels and camping field with their respective parking areas. Barn has been shifted alongside farmhouse, with holiday cottages replacing them.

Furthermore, the flow of river has not been distrubed and is currenly untouched with any new development on it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a clear overview of the main transformation, noting that the track became a road and that new facilities were added. You also correctly identify the continued presence of the fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables and river. However, some important details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep area was not simply “crowded with solar panels and camping field”; these facilities occupy parts of the former open area, with parking in two separate locations. The statement that the barn was “shifted alongside farmhouse, with holiday cottages replacing them” is also confusing: the barn remains on the site, while the cottages are a new development beside the road and north of the farmhouse. More precise comparisons and clearer descriptions of what was retained, relocated or added would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and separate descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the comparison. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the progression within the final two paragraphs is less controlled: the sentence about the barn and cottages combines several changes without making their locations or relationships clear. “Similarly” does not introduce a precise parallel, and the river comment adds little after the main comparisons. Grouping information by area—for example, the western fields and the eastern buildings—would improve the logical flow and make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change, including “substantial additions,” “modified,” “replaced” and “remained.” These choices help communicate the broad transformation. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “crowded with” for the new facilities and “shifted alongside” for the barn. “The flow of river has not been disturbed” is also an awkward way to describe the river’s unchanged course. There are spelling errors in “distrubed” and “currenly,” and “sheep aream” appears to be a typing or spelling slip. Aim for precise map language such as “located,” “converted,” “retained” and “situated,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast introduced by “While in the current site” and the overview sentence beginning “On the other hand.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce clarity. For example, “the site of Beechwood farm” needs more accurate article and capitalisation choices, while “the area of sheep” and “sheep aream” do not form clear noun phrases. The sentence “Barn has been shifted alongside farmhouse, with holiday cottages replacing them” has missing articles and an unclear pronoun reference. “There was no road but only a track” also needs more precise sentence construction. Practise articles, plural forms and clear references when comparing features.
